I'm doing a bit of a survey...

Is there anyone out there that either has been done or knows someone that has been done by temporary average speed cameras set up in motorway roadworks ?

By all accounts and my own experience they don't work.

Good question... I've been through one most days for the last 2 years and never worry about my speed (not that I'm doing 30 MPH over the limit or anything like that, though) - I've yet to receive a ticket.

Yeah, know of a couple in our local club.
My mate Pete got done for doing 57 in a 50 and they wouldn't offer him a speed awareness course as it was in roadworks (he believed the old changing lanes trick and got caught out)!
Apparently they never put in 'dummy only' systems, but there are usually only a couple of live cameras, cos they can't afford to issue loads of tickets, so they swap them around occasionally - I must have been lucky in the past, but now I'm careful & just use cruise control!

I would like to say it would be 100% no... they give you warning and if you break it and get caught then you are just stupid.

Bit like the old fashion big red button and 'do not press for risk of injury' some person will come along and press it and then start complaining they did nothing wrong!!

Two lads I know both got caught doing 58mph in roadworks speed camera areas. Both offered the course instead of points, both said they'd gone faster through roadworks before and nothing had ever come of it.

I've heard that a lot of the cameras aren't connected due to the cost of wiring them up to the computer systems.

It also might explain why the cameras point at all sorts of angles because they aren't actually doing anything.

My understanding is that the camera has to have a good line of sight on the traffic so it has the time to zero in on the number plate.

Anyway, I've never been done.

I have!!

A few years ago when they had (IIRC) a 40mph limit on the northbound carriageway of the M11 (North of Stansted).
I was late for football and...well...49 in a 40 = SP30.

They do work.

You can see that they're live, I always just assumed that in order to make it fair/legitimate it has to be based on the shortest distance possible between the cameras, i.e. straightlining the whole motorway, in which case if you're following the road and staying in lane then the calculated speed is pessimistic, because you've travelled further than the shortest possible route.

I.e. if you get done for 56mph, you were probably doing quite a bit more than that

No front number plate.

Some say that they have rear facing ones now, but havent seen any myself.

Yeah, the Treasury always get the fine! - the scamera partnership get paid to process the tickets by the roadworks contractor, or by the council or police!
I have a mate who's a Quantity Surveyor for Balfour Beatty, and he says they have to put aside money for the partnership to issue tickets since they changed the rules on fine revenue - it was him that told me they are never entirely dummy systems, as they're not allowed to.

A mate of mine got done a few years back inbetween cambridge and essex.

He got 3 points, which took him over his 6 point limit (for first two years) and was banned for a year!

I was pretty sure they just take your test pass status away, and all you need to do is pass your test again... not that it happened to me... ahem... yes, of course not.

Probationary Periods
Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995

If a driver first passes a driving test on or after 1/6/97 and accumulates 6 or more penalty points on his driving licence within the first 2 years of passing a driving test (either in the UK, Gibraltar or any EC State) as a result of offences committed before his test or within that 2 year period, his licence will be revoked by notice in writing and he will have to reapply for a provisional licence and retake a driving test if a full licence is wanted.

Only penalty points gained from offences committed within the previous 3 years count.

Why an earth would you think it wouldn't work? It is an urban myth!

I know the 50's are a little frustrating, and sort of understandable when at 3:00 in the morning you are on your own, but speeding in the roadworks when people are working there is just selfish! It is nothing big and clever! I hate speed cameras but people that push the speeds where clearly it isn't safe are the reason the stupid things are in place!!
