I did a lot of research into this when I bought my M5 and I would go with the BMW warranty but there are positive and negatives.
BMW Warranty...
BMW garages are linked into it, drop the car off, work done, collect it.
Anything the car needs to have done, servicing, brake fluid change etc, etc MUST be done at a BMW garage for the warranty to remain valid. This might not be the desired choice if you've bought an older car and would prefer an independant to do your work.
If you have over 60,000 miles on the clock they are expensive.
Warranty Direct (etc)
You can have the work done at any VAT approved garage.
You can get your servicing done at any approved garage.
There's a "claim procedure" where you'd have to take the car in, get estimates, get approval, then the work done etc, etc. Could cause delays on getting anything done under warranty.

I had a Warranty Direct warranty on my RS6. It was crap scheme. Despite it being fully comp / max cover they tried to wriggle out of every little claim they could. They take 10 days to pay up once youve eventually got the go ahead (you have to pay the bill initially) and when they do pay up its minus the mileage based % they calculate to keep thier costs down.
The BMW warranty however looks excellent and every review i have read seems to say the same thing: 'no hastle!'. Just take the car in, job done (so long as its covered), go home without getting your wallet raped.
Warranty direct cover will be £800 a year i reckon, along with an excess for reapirs and any % they charge you for mileage (based on my RS6 comparison). BMW will be circa £960 a year if you dont let the manufacturers cover lapse, but there will be no excesses and no % deducted for mileage. Its a no-brainer.

Oh, and here's a laugh for you. If you own an Audi (over 3.2 litre) an extended warranty costs approx £2500 a year. OUCH!!!

Mark, great point! I remember when I had my CSL, I was paranoid about going over 60k miles as the warranty renewal would have jumped!
So, to summarise, if the car is out of warranty and sub 60k miles one should renew monthly and select the indefinite option- or is it a rolling contract until you inform BMW?
Its a rolling contract that will continue to run until you tell Mondial to stop covering you. The price is not fixed however (although people have told me it is). It says in the contract that direct debits may be subject to change ie. prices might go up. I'd bet on another £2-odd going on after the vat rise. Even so, its a no-brainer. Its supposedly bomb proof and you dont have to get your wallet out for a claim.

I'm looking very seriously at a 2-3 year old AUC M5. Obviously I'd want to extend the warranty after the 1yr AUC period is up. I somewhere between 8-10k per year and have been ruling out cars on 40/50k miles due to the huge increase in annual warranty cost after 60k miles, and that I'd hit this in 18 months of ownership.
I've seen a few posts where people mention paying monthly by DD and the price not increasing after 60k miles. Is this just something that happens by chance (e.g., it's not meant to be this way but there's no mechanism in place for them to check mileage and increase the cost) or is it something that can be taken for granted?

When you take out the monthly cover, they commit not to increase the cover for 12 months. They then take a monthly charge until the policy is cancelled and have the rolling right after 12 months to either alter the payment amount or cancel the policy, subject to prior notification. In practice this does not seem to happen but it could do and they get the mileage info through the service network as for instance trying telling the system you have done less miles than the last service figure and it will come up with a warning message. The other key threshold is 100k as you only qualify for basic cover. You pay about 10% extra for the monthly route, so given past history, it is the one to go for if you are going to breach 60k within the next 12 monthsSorry to bump an old thread.

My e61 M5 Touring is up in June, and I have been quoted by Mondial/BMW Extended Warranty for Comprehensive Cover and BMW Breakdown as follows:
£0 excess - £951/yr or £87/month rolling
£100 excess - £835/yr or £77/month rolling
£250 excess - £690/yr or £63/month rolling
With this car always go with BMW....

Yes, my E46 M3 is going to be coming up to 60,000 next renewal end March, have been using annual Mondial BMW extended warranty since 2007 and has been great, probably broken-even for me over 4 years. Peace of mind is fantastic. So I'll go monthly from now on and take £87pcm at 0 xs.
The policy has covered: rear springs/power steering hoses/front drop link/alternator/RTAB/diff seal & a dual mass flywheel (got a new clutch out of that too) so far. The diagnosis time for the alternator would have been a killer w/o warranty.
Does the monthly figure include the emergency services cover (also been excellent, including managing a puncture in Italy for me)?

Nope it really is that good! I've been paying £87 a month for the last 2 years and have 110,000 miles now and they still pay out. Twice they have NOT paid now, one was clutc so fair enough, another was diagnosed as ECU problem but they wouldn;t pay because ECU was modified. Turns out it wasn't the ECU anyway! Had more than 12k in claims in last 2 years, mostly due to the crazy miles I do. Wouldn;t dream of owning without the genuine BMW monthly warranty.Sorry to bump an old thread.
