I'm currently looking for an extra car (worth ~£1,000) - I have found a few suitable ones, but they are all about 10 miles from where I live. The problem is I cannot get temporary insurance due to my age, so I can't take a test-drive or get it home.

I spoke to my insurer for my current car and asked whether it would be possible to swap my policy over to the new car for an afternoon. However, they said this would not be possible until I've bought the car. They are all private sellers, so they obviously don't have any sort of trade cover I could use.

It will remain off-road for a few weeks once I've bought it, so I can't take out a full insurance policy - this would cost ~£2,500 anyway.

Here are the options I can think of:
- Hire a trailer of some sort (I assume this would cost too much considering what the car's worth)
- Have someone over 25 take out a temporary policy and drive it back to my house, paid for by me (I wouldn't really want to ask anybody)

Anyone got any ideas?

Take a test drive with the seller, better than none at all. Ask seller to drive you and the car the 10 miles home and then drive them back in your car, buy them a drink for their trouble.

Did you ask the seller if they could deliver the car? I've been in the same position twice, and both times the (private) seller was nice enough to bring the car to my house after I bought it. One was followed by a mate, the other I drove home in my old car.
