Is there a way in the "rules wizard" to set incoming mail as read so they don't trigger the new mail icon and sound? I've got a spam filter that tags incoming spam's subject so the "rules wizard" can move it into a "spam" folder but each one still trigger the new mail icon and sound.

Yes you can use the Rules Wiz to do this, and in my experience it works about 99% of the time, but not always.

If you go and edit your rule, you should see a 'clear message flag' option on the same screen where you specify the folder to move the mail to...

The only advanced options are "play a sound" or "briefly change the mouse cursor", unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

I set up the rule with the "clear message flag" and it's not worked once It catches all the messages ok and moves them to the spam folder but they are still listed as unread.

Any other suggestions?

ARe your rules client or server based?

the clear flag rule only works for client based rules as Outlook needs to be running at the time the rule is processed

It's running on my work computer all the time so emails are processed as they come in. It does a send/receive every 5 minutes. The appear very briefly (>1 second) in the inbox, then get moved to the spam folder still marked as unread.
