I currently have a M5 E39 i love this car. Problem Vanos unit x 2 are noisy, car is not running smoothly as it should be. My mechanic can do the job but he cant find the tool needed to remove the Vanos, has anyone any idea where this tool can be hired from. Or who else specialises in repair of vanos. i know only of bmw direct or MR Vanos, both these charge a ridiculous amount for a job which my mechanic if has the tool can remove Vanos send of for repair change the timing chain all for under a grand!!

Help please.

nice talking to you all.

Search M5board, AFAIK there's a few video tutorials and such like showing how to remove vanos solenoids etc without the use of special tools.

Not sure if you can see the pics unless you're a member on M3 Torque, but there are great tutorials on preventive maintenance for E39's. Have a look at this vanos piece.

Agree, great source of information;

It's only usually the solenoids that need attention and not the actual vanos mechanical unit. Very much a DIY job smile

Also, this guy is excellent. He came to me and sorted by M3 in the works carpark for around 40% of dealer rates.

no special tools are needed to remove the vanos units.
