Morning,

I am looking to purchase a new TV in the next week or so.

I have my eye on the LG 37LE5300:

Richersounds currently have this for £499.99 or £549.94 with a 5 year guarantee

Good choice or is there a better TV for the money (1080p, edge LED, 28mm thick, 1080p)

Aside from the thinness, it's LCD, and 1080 pixels in too small an area to benefit from unless sat 4ft from it.
Panasonic P37X20 Plasma would be the sensible option, or the 42S20 if you must have Full HD and will be sitting 5-6ft away when watching 1080p movies from your BR player.

I was looking at a 32" TV as most of what I watch is Freeview, IMO Freeview does not look that good on a 42" as the resolution is not high enough. I do have BluRay and do watch 1080p sometimes so that was why I was thinking a 37"

Too much of a generalisation - not all processing is the same, not all tuners are the same, and there's enough difference between LCD and Plasma regarding the latter being more sympathetic to poorer signals.
So the 42S20 is only out of the running on cost, and the 37X20 is the best "small" display all round.

Find a local AV store that has the Panasonics on display, and go see them with regular broadcasts being displayed, not cartoon movies which only serve to flatter LCDs in the likes of Currys, etc.

I have the lg, bought it a couple of weeks ago, and compared to the others in the store I thought it looked great, although the sound is st so you'll need some sort of amp/speaker package.

Thanks for the advice Giles. Which size LG 5300 series did you go for in the end?

Fortunately I run the sound through a Denon AV receiver and speakers as I am quite fussy with sound.

I went for the 37" although I've since noticed the 42" is the same price! I run mine with skyHD and I've been very pleased with it. I work in the TV industry so can compare it with the professional stuff at work and it compares VERY well. I find I have to back the contrast off slightly but other than that a very good picture for the money. I cant comment on the freeview performance as I've not tried it.

There isn't much between the 37 and 42 in price at the moment.... The only reason I am going for 37 is because I was undecided between the 32 and 42. The 42 may look a bit big in my lounge.

That is a pretty good endorsement if you are in TV industry. I'll be sure to check the TV out with a freeview source.

It does indeed depend on the source. I've used an upgraded HDMI cable for my freesat box, made the SD picture much clearer with less 'noise'. Just make sure you compare more than one source.
