Can any knowledgable folk at PH help me?

I have an old Worcester 280 Combi boiler that stopped last night.

The pressure was low so have refilled it up to 1.2 bar.

The guy on the technical helpline said I needed to hit the reset button (which would reignite the pilot light):

As you may (or may not) be able to see the button is impossible to press down, am I doing something wrong? Do I need to loosen the nut at the base off first?

Any other help would be hugely appreciated, I'm shivering as I write this!

Here's a shot of the control panel if its any help...

PS. Mods - didnt know where this should go but wanted it to get maximum exposure at least for a bit!

I think you'll find that the centre of the button can be pressed. Use a pen if you're fingers are to fat to fit in.

Are you sure that's a button? Looks like a hose filling point in that pic?

Looks like there is a plunger in the middle of the threaded bit, looks to have a cross on, perhaps this pushes down, or comes out to reveal the reset button.

If not, consider this a free bump! smile

If the topic is no good, the site is very good for tips/troubleshooting etc. So maybe throw a post up.

The red reset button wont move, the crosed bit in the middle pops out by about 3/4 mm but just drops back in....looks like a wait in for British Gas tomorrow...

Read the last post in my link

If the reset button is 'out', it will protrude from its surround by about 2-3mm only. Pressing this firmly, you will feel a definite click, but it wil only move the 2-3mm back in. When you have it reset, the small red button should be more ore less level with its surround.

Maybe it buggered

They can fail, They can crack/shatter, I've had to remove a bird that decided to nest in the chimney and made the house very smokey, they can spring a leak, the central heating pump can fail etc etc etc.

I'd be touching some wood about now Puggit, and not some that is on fire in your stove!!! hehe

That overheat thermostat button is pushed in. The boiler has stopped for some other reason. It MAY be faulty (you could temporarily bridge it out to find out).

Hose filling connection? Pressing it in with a pen?

Plumbing questions seem to bring everyone coming in with their plumbing knowledge, (or maybe not) on show! I know everyone is trying to help, so I won't say any more.

The red overheat reset button will pop up the middle section by a few mill if it's tripped. If it's flush with the top, it's not tripped out.

Does it try to light at all when calling for heating or hot water?

Also, turn up the temperature dial all the way and then back if off a smidge. It's a common misconception, but you aren't saving any gas, it's just taking longer for the rads to heat up, so the boiler is on for longer.
