Advice please on my p38 vogue.
Discussion
Hi guys,i am hoping for a bit of advice here, I bought my p38 Vogue a couple of weeks ago,its a 2000 x , i intend to smoke it around in the wintry months. The car is absolutely perfect in every way appart from the steering.!!!!!! No big deal it just tends to wander a tad, there is no real play on the steering wheel, the tyre pressures are good,so what could it be,and do i need to go and find a tree to hang myself on.??? Is it likely my finances will become similar to Irelands.!!! Any helping advice will be much appreciated. Cheers Piers.
They definitely tend to feel a little "loose" compared to your average car, but shouldn't be wandering all over the road. What pressure are you running in the tyres as they tend to like a little higher than recommended with 34 PSI being about right for many people. Worth getting the front tyres and tracking checked as well.
Thanks for that, I am running on 35psi all round. Its hard to put my finger on,as the steering is in its self fine, but hit even a small bump in the gutter and i have noticed it tries to creep in that direction. If the road cambers off to the right, then thats where it wants to be,so it would seem i am for ever having to correct the steering, just small inputs but never the less i know there is a problem there.
Cheers Piers.

Blimey, you could be me!
My 'new' 2000 'x' plate is indentical as you describe. Catch a lump on the side of the road, a drain hole or lump and it can really seem to try and fling you into the kerb.
Then it's fine for a distance where the road is all smooth and flat, and then suddenly you find the car wandering swiftly one way or the other requiring a sharp correction.
All this at speed of probably 40-50mph +
I'm just assuming it's the way it is until someone says differently here.

After being totally convinced that my Vogue was normal,i ventured out to my local last night for copious ammounts of falling down water.
Afriend came in, (a bit of a dealer) he was driving a 2000 P38 diesel called an Ascot. I was all smart telling him that it was a shame that they handled like pigs. He threw me his keys and said go and drive mine.
My god,his drives like a dream, does not wander at all and is actually a lot quicker on take off then my Vogue. Hes had it chipped ,but the difference is amazing,so much so that i am going round to buy it at a very overpriced 6 grand. His doesnt have as many goodies as mine but its just a far nicer car.And his car does not drop at all.
Any one looking for a really nice Vogue then im your man.

There are lots of possible reasons for this.
For a start, your tyre pressues are wrong. They should be 28 front and 38 rear.
P38s are very fussy about tyres, especially on larger wheels. Fit the wrong ones and it'll wander all over the place. Pirelli Scorpion STs used to work very well, but they've been superseded by Pirelli STRs which seem to be awful on the P38. Mine were so bad, I considered them to be dangerous and took them back.
I've got General Grabber AT2s on mine which seem to work excellently both on and off road.
Other than that, you could be looking at track rods ends, drag link or steering damper.

My poor Vogue, after all the slagging off that i have given it,i took it on a 2hundred mile trip yesterday. She behaves so well omn motorways, infact a sheer joy to drive, steering behaves perfectly.
On the downside, since owning her, i am getting Christmas cards from my local filling station, and all the oil rich Gulf States are sending me birthday cards.
My trip thingy tells me i am getting 18mpg But computer says no.

I too have just aquired an R reg p38 and mine does the strange wandering all over the road thing. Also bang on 50 mph the front of the car starts to shakefrom side to side that once you drive through it is fine.Fitted a new steering damper but still doing it.Any advice on wot to do next much appreciated.
Hi All.
I have a 2002 p38 4.0 county and wife has 1997 p38 4.0(now parked up)
The wandering we are all getting could be a few things, 1.steering damper and or bushes 2. tyre preasure, 3. Tracking, 4. swivel balljoints (of which there are 2 at each end of the axle and need pressing out and neww pressing in)5. steering box adjustment, 6. track/tie rod ends.
The best place to start off investigation is tracking then go for steering damper , if these are ok the next thing most likey is swivel joints play may not show up at MOT but will manifest as slight wander and or constant steering correction on rougher less smooth roads and or wobble when lumps and hollows are driven over.
Hope this has helped
regards
Tony

Just sold my R/R Vogue P38 51/02, running on 18" alloys, 28psi front and 38psi rear if you've got wide tyres you'll end up tracking in the ruts of the road as well.Cheers Piers.
