starter problem

hi all my engine turns over and fires but after a few turns the starter makes a grinding noise any ideas?

A number of possibilities.
Ring gear worn and starting to strip.
Worn starter pinion
Failed bearing in the starter

I would think the starter needs to come off for inspection.

If the ring gear is failing then it is most likely 'box and/or engine out to replace. As the starter pinion would also be worn you may put off having to do the ring gear by replacing the starter pinion or the whole starter.
