W129 - Heated seat and wing mirror
Discussion
Hi,
I have a W129 SL 320 (98) and the recent cold weather has identified that the drivers side heated seat and heating element on the drivers side door mirror do not seem to work, passenger side works fine. Since we've had the car (6 months) the SRS warning light comes and stays on I believe this is some kind of air bag sensor for the drivers side, could it be related to an electrics problem?
I've checked the fuses and they seem OK, any thoughts?

Hard to say without seeing the car, have you considered taking the car to a dealer or independent specialist to get a short test/code read performed? Given the age I'd be inclined to say the faults are just coincidental. The driver's heated seat will have been used a lot more than the passenger side and has probably burnt the element out, quite a common occurence on all heated seat equipped vehicles. Same for the mirror, it could possibly either be a corroded contact or a break in the wiring around the A pillar and hinge area, again the driver's door will have been opened and closed a lot more often than the passenger side so it's possible the wiring could be a lot more delicate on that side. As for the SRS light it could be a few things, impossible to say without seeing a fault code readout.

I have a 98 E55 with the same problems. The heated seat I think is a wiring problem as sometimes it works sometimes not. If the element is burnt out Mercedes do not sell them on their own as they are stitched into the leather, there are aftermarket suppliers though. I got a price of about £80 from here

The heated mirror is an interesting one. I thought they were triggered by switching on the heated rear screen, so I took the mirror glass out and checked for a 12v supply to the conector, and got none. It turns out they have a thermostat built into the glass, if the temp is below 15°C they come on automatically. I've priced up a new glass from Mercedes and they are £55.

In my 1998 W140 which possibly uses the same mirrors the wiring in the mirror housing can chafe and rub through its insulation which stops the mirror from working. My driver's side mirror does not work and I am pretty sure that is the problem, have not had time to do anything other than a 50:50 looking bodge fix.
