GT5 - Should be so simple

It came the other day, great game, hours of playing.
Decided to try and play a couple of mates online, and can't for the life of me figure out (or find out) how to play friends online or invite them to a lobby/game.
If anyone has managed this, a point in the right direction would be massively appreciated
