On a road with two lanes with one lane that you can only go left and one only straight on.

Do you indicate to go left in the left only lane or not bother as you can only go one way.

Yep, I was told to always do so for the sake of pedestrians who don't look at the road marking etc.

I think its good practice to just always indicate, you get yourself into the habit of it then. Some people don't indicate if noone is behind them etc but I always do just to keep myself in the habit so you don't forget to indicate when you actually need to.

If the road simply bears left then you're not turning/changing lanes are you? I wouldn't if you have no choice in the matter.

I indicate only when the signal will be of use to another road user.

I don't see how it could do any harm, so yes I do.

I'd say only indicate if it clarifies what you are doing, if you indicate left and there is a parking space on your left before the turn you may look like you are going to pull over rather than follow the road round.

Yes because the driver in the right hand lane may think you are not turning and give way (yeah right) obstructing vehicles behind you.

Here's a good one, you're on a dual carridgeway and catch up to a slower moving vehicle. You check your mirrors and there's nothing behind you so you signal and initiate the overtake. The person you are passing has an ego attack and accelorates to match your speed. You are both at the speed limit, you are slightly ahead but if you go back to the left hand lane the braking distance between you at the car you have just passed would not be enough. There are speed cameras everywhere so you can't put more distance between the two cars. You check your mirrors again to see a car in the right hand lane catching you at well above the speed limit. So do you....

a/ Signal left wait a few seconds and change lane having given the egotist plenty of warning?
b/ Slow down and change lane when you are a safe distance behind the car you have just passed?
c/ Hold your possition until there is a safe distance to change lane holding the speeding car up until you do?

I indicate if I think other road users may benefit from it. In a filtered lane, i.e. one in whihc you cannot physically move forward, only to the side, I probably won't indicate. Given the number of utter tts who move to the front of an empty right turn only lane (one where you can physically go straight on, but the markings do not allow it) to jump a queue of traffic inthe morning by going straight on, I think it is appropriate to indicate in such a lane.

The advantage, and why I use this method as stated by POD, is that one is aware of all that is going on around one. smile

But you know what they are,
so I deduce that you may not be a fully qualified BMW driver smile

This is the principle I work off.

Even though I may be in a lane which can only go on direction I always indicate so people can be sure of where I'm travelling.

I've seen plenty of people sat in left/right only lanes who then plough straight on.
