Well i followed a moped home from work about 7am this morning. Crazy bloke didnt vare about the 5 inches of overnight snow, followed him for about 5-6 miles and to give him credit he didnt fall off despite some very hairy moments!!!! makes a mockery of other people using the snow as an excuse!!

I wouldn't fall off if I had both feet on the ground.

I saw a similar brave soul coming down the Spine Road this afternoon! 4" of loose snow and no feet down!

he didnt have his feet sown all the way, just as he approaced junctions. I wanted to pass him but i was intrigued by his antics so followed.

I've done it before. Maybe he had just finished a night shift and had no choice.

When I had my first bike, I didn't have a car. Work expected me to be there come rain or shine (or snow) so have bike, will travel. smile

Last night I saw a big sports bike loaded up with panniers & the guy wearing a big rucksack heading off at 9pm (for a long trip by the looks of it) from a side road with 6-8 inches of snow. I couldn't believe it - hope he made it!

Took this last year near me, well ipressed with the guy. Sadly (and ironically) he came off a couple of months later on a road that was full of potholes due to the snow

Bit blurry, but he was feet up on this oneeek

As detailed on the "worst experience in snow" thread, I used to motorbike whatever the conditions, and rode in snow like this.

At the time, it seemed the most natural thing in the world, but I'd not fancy it nowadays.

It does, though, suggest that you can get by just fine in the snow irrespective of tyres, or number of wheels.

used to ride in snow myself, take it easy, lean yourself rather than the bike and you will be surprised how much you can get away with. more than anything, follow car tracks and look for the 'best bit of the road'

modern Radial tyres are worse than teh old style that bikes used ( Metz Me33/99's etc) as they have much less tread than old style tyres so I wouldn't feel as confident today on my Varadero as I did on my old GSX400 in 1989.

Fair do to the fella on your photo, but I live > 50 miles from work so I wouldn't fancy that far in those conditions...

It's perfectly possible to ride a bike in snow, provided it's slush/snow and not ice the tyres do a fair job of cutting through to the blacktop underneath. The trick is to be riding something that you don't mind dropping...

At this years Elephant Rally in Bavaria it wasn't too tricky to ride the bike out uphill on this road, even though there was loads of snow and and inch or so of sheet ice underneath it. That's with a fully togged up tourer getting on for 300kg plus a seat so high I could only touch a foot down one side at a time

Awesome snowy bike shot. Much respect. I keep watching the Long Way Round / Down and thinking of getting an off road tourer
