Me neither, at that price i'm seriously considering one next year. Whats the downside other than expensive servicing and parts?
On my list as well. From my research if you get a good one with good history and lots of stuff done recently brakes, tyres inspection 1 etc then they are reasonable to run. However if you get a bad one or simply unlucky they can empty your pockets rapidly.Servicing is every 2 years or 15000 miles (whichever comes first). I'd budget for about a £1k on average each time it goes in for one.
I've heard the suspension is usually pretty shagged by the 60000 mile mark, so budget for that also. Rear springs are prone to snapping too.
I'm no expert mind, someone will probably be along soon to correct me..

As with all precious metal that plummets in purchase-cost, the running costs generally remain as was...
—inspection II is about £500 indy, £700 BMW
—rear tyres from about £400 for decent ones
—front discs and pads from about £400
From what I recall (sold mine over a year ago) oil wasn't too cheap either. I suffered from a snapped spring too. Oh, and my SMG box wasn't the best... after only 20,000 miles it would somehow 'miss' 3rd to 4th, generally when I was on the limiter during a track day... CRUNCH!!!
Not good. They go sideways for fun though
With the prices being as they are currently I've been considering swapping my E36 track-car for one, but they're still pretty costly to get to a decent track-spec IMHO.

I had one in 08, low mileage (37k when bought) 2 owner car with FBMWSH
Anything that went wrong it was never cheap, bottom arms, power steering rack, RTABs, brakes, and servicing, that little lot cost me the guts of 5k in a year, so I got rid before it bankrupted me.
They are cheap now, but after owning one I'm not sure I'd have another, potential money pits

Another day i cant get it right. f
k me at this rate i will be having detention from garlick and co for about the next 10 years. On a slightly different note, and a bit OT, i once made the mistake of trying to run a ur-quattro on a budget. Dont. Its impossible, especially if its an older one, as parts are horrendously expensive. One example. The rear calipers are on an arm that attaches to the rear half shafts, or cross members, i cant remember which, but pattern ones at the time(1993) were £400, and genuine audi ones were nearly double that. So for those of us drooling over cheap m3s and m5s, then bear in mind the potential pitfalls.
Still would have either one though
