If work continues how it is ill have to shift my MX5 soon and trying to keep something RWD and sporty as ive only had the MX5 for a few months and love it! so would 8k on an e46 330D sport be enough? hopefully sub 100K miles. i dont fancy buying my way into hell with a dog because its not enough and i havent much room to increase the budget at all.

IMO an £8k E46 has just as much chance of being a dog as a £5k one. £8k sounds more than enough, to be honest. Won't have any problem getting a very good one for that price, if you look around.

just make yourself aware of the common faults, auto boxes in particular with a 330d. between 03 and 06 my dad had a facelifted 330d (the very early 204bhp models) and it was faultless (i mean, totally faultless) for the 84k miles he covered in it.

was a cracking car for long trips because you could sit at erm, speed, with half decent economy. if you can, go for the petrol though, their economy is still pretty good.

not that i'm aware of, i think it's the extra torque from the diesel, coupled with the silly "sealed for life" thing. thing is, if the car has had a full service history and hasn't too high miles, get the oil changed and it should be fine.

Dunno about 'problems' but mine failed at 127k miles - not a bad life life really.

I had a 02 330d sport at 55k to 65k. A month or 2 after I'd sold it the gearbox went costing a small fortune. I had no problems with it apart from front suspension. Bushes and lower control arms.

Buy a £4k one and gamble you'll need less than £4k of repairs on the remainder of the car's life hehe

Do you do the mileage to warrant a diesel?

currently i do circa 15k a year in the mazda at around 30mpg, if work changes this could go upto 25k+ which would make quite a difference at 40mpg

I want something i like which currently is the mx5 but i cant really afford to run it at 20k a year as the depreciation and associated running costs will be madness. so a 3series keeps rwd sportyness.

IMO i dont think 127K miles is acceptable on a BMW. E21 Ross isnt it true its just a case of changing the Gearbox fluid to stop it failing?

i don't think 127k on a gearbox is acceptable, it should outlast the car IMO. oil changes every 40-50k will make it last a lot longer, yes. if OP can get a relatively low mileage one, then it should be fine. manual boxes don't suffer the same fate as far as i know.

For info, I am part exchanging a 4 dr 2003 E60 530d SE Auto with massive spec, 109k miles, FSH, full MOT etc (see my profile) for £5k, so there's a benchmark on what the trade sees cars at the present time. There's a massive history file (inlcuding almost a new motor due to swirl flaps) and it will make someone a brilliant motor even when it's back on a forecourt for £7k+.

If i go down the 330d route itll definatly be manual to retain some enjoyment and im not willing to loose the mpg for a bit of a lazier experience, anyone know how they compare to the Modeo STTDCI?

while the ST tdci is certainly cheaper, so you'll be able to get a newer car with lower miles for that price... the 330d is the better car. it has 50bhp more, more torque, it's RWD and the 6 cylinder diesel is far more refined than any 4 cylinder diesel i've ever been in. however, you'll get better economy in the 4 cylinder diesel. the 330d is still economical though, easily over 40mpg on a run at a pretty decent pace. you want the later, 6 speed cars though, i have no idea on the earlier 5 speeds, my dads was one of the earliest 204bhp and 6 speed cars in the country.

i also think the E46 interior is a really nice place to be. especially at night.

it hasn't got 1 million buttons, is very well laid out and, well, it's just nice.
been 4.5 years since my dads old 330d left, still remember the day it went, i'm not a fan of diesels myself, but it was a good car IMO and i was sad to see it go.

On the manual cars does 5spd = 184bhp and 6spd = 204bhp?
