Window winds down, but not up

As per topic, my next door neighbour's Cerb drivers window winds down ok, but not up? He's taken the door card off - the elec window motor spins freely one way, but no action the other?

Any suggestions please?

Disconnect the connector on the motor and operate the button to move the window up, use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the plug, maybe just a bad connection somewhere?

OK so it appears to be a connection that is dodgy. We tried the window motor on the passenger side and it works fine both ways.

Connected back to the drivers side - when we press the door button, the window winds down a bit as you would expect. The button next to the radion also winds the window down perfect.

When we close the door, the window does not wind up. No response when we press the button next to radio to wind window up.

We also disconnected the wiring from the control box on the petrol tank and reconnected but no change.

Must be a dodgy connection somwhere....but where....?

Your answer lies above, check with ohm meter on the back of the plug/socket to find high resistance, the connections behind the doorcards are always favourite.

One step closer - we've discvovered that the window does indeed wind up - only when the door is shut, when pressing the button next to the radio.

Window will not wind up with the door open, or wind up when you close the door.

Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the wires where the loom goes from the door, into the car (just along a bit from the emergency pull handle IIRC). I had very similar symptoms with the same root cause.

They can have a mind of their own, my drivers side was ok, until the lights were on,but wouldn't work until you switched them off. Passenger side always worked fine, typical TVR charm. Sorry not much help.

I've got a very similar issue. The window will not go up on the button by the radio, nor will it go up when the door is shut or the alarm set. I've established that the motor will spin in either direction when opening closing the door, but only if its hanging free. When its fixed in place it won't move.

I think I may have two problems - one is the cables to the window motor are breaking down, so I can get 12v showing, but not enough current to spin the motor under load, plus I think the 'up' button may be faulty (pressing the down button with the motor disconnected, I can hear the relay click in the control box in the boot.

I had to replace the power wires to the window motor on the passesnger side a few years ago. My next test will be to check that when directly connected to a battery that the motor will wind the window up and down. If it does, then I suspect the wires going from the body to the door, as years of flexing could have broken them down. If not, then the motor is weak and will need fixing/replacing.

As an update, fixed mine yesterday and it was the power wires for the window. Somewhere between the connector inside the car and the door, there was a bad connection. Probably where the wires have flexed for 13 years between the door and the car body. To check this was the case, I took a couple of wires from the connector inside the car to the motor first to test, and its worked fine, so it was then worth the hassle of threading new wires from the door into the car via the rubber grommets. Fiddling and swearing required.
