I went around last month checking and topping up the antifreeze in the cars, with Halfords finest.

The bit I had left I put in a coke bottle and chucked it outside. My early warning idea being that if it froze I have a problem.

Well it did last night and it was only -9!

So mad rush round this morning getting some proper stuff into the cars.

OP, are you sure you should be using the blue antifreeze? I put that in my Golf last year without realising my error and it required a new radiator. yikes

Only use the pink now.

It was ready mixed stuff so it should be 40-50%. I will check it out later and find out.

Now using proper Bluecol.

Amazing!! Knowing halfrauds it was prob the ready mixed stuff. Some things you can go for the cheap option, but oil and antifreeze get the best you can.

The blue stuff normaly has a slightly fruitier flavour. Pink is nuttier with a stronger bouquet.

Masturbation, assuming the anti freeze doesn't get you first

I bought some screen wash from sainsburys. Its ready mixed and when I read it the label says it works all the way to -2 degrees c. Well that was a fking waste of money then!frown

I think the technical term is "fooked it". hehe
After filling with anti-freeze, I went on a 3 week holiday to South Africa leaving the car in the freezing winter conditions. On return it quickly became apparent I was losing fluid through the radiator. I assume the blue cocktail was ste.

I don't know the exact details between the two types but after further investigation at the time, all I can tell you is that there is most certainly a difference. More knowledgeable folk over here should be able to advise.

IIRC all recent VAG cars should use G12 coolant only (the pink stuff).

That's frozen bottle is quite surprising; to outward appearances (which is what most people would go for after all) that looks like a good "strong" mix. To have it freeze totally solid like that is quite alarming - I'd expect it to get perhaps a bit mushy at silly temperatures at worst.

Antifreeze as in coolant? Not screenwash??

I drove a 120 mile round trip last night, averaged around -8 most of the time and the screenwash didnt defrost at all. That was a rough 70/30 mix of screenwash/water. The coolant was fine though

Don't be thinking the pink stuff from halfrauds is the same as the pink OEM g12 from audi/VW, cus it aint!!
Also a lot of heads on cars don't like cheap antifreeze causing internal problems. Cossie engines iirc suffer if you don't use OEM.
