best e39 for £6000
Discussion
Was thinking of changing my e46 318se after xmas.I have a budget of £6000.Although there are hundreds of decent e46s for sale at this price decent e39s seem to be a bit harder to find. which is the best model to go for I really like the m sports but they seem pricey with sensible miles.I really like the e46 but from what Ive read and heard the e39 is a better car.Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated
Miles make no difference on an E39, it'll cost a load to run whatever the miles are so buy the best condition one you can. Chances are the bigger the miles the more of the E39 common failures will already have been fixed.
I paid just over £7k for my E39 530i Sport when it was less than 5 years old and it was immaculate so I'd be suprised if £6k wont buy you a nice one over 4 years later!

I reckon you could get this for £4.5k which allows you to keep a bit back.
Rare, sought after and looks like a good 'un?

An haggle might buy you this M5 http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2176184.htm
Hiya
Yes, that M5 is one of the basic spec versions and also an early car. As per all E39 M5 discussions, it'd be need to checked over for all the usual issues and problems to evaluate if it's worth taking a chance with it. Could be that the current owner just wants to shift it as it approaches that psychological 100K miles and hasn't now got the funds to do the required maintenence. I do know of a 'few' sub £7000 M5's that have been bought that have indeed turned out to be very nice indeed and others that've only needed a slightly higher than nominal amount spent on them. So 'fairly' good M5's can be had for this sort of money - both examples I know of were checked over very well by their current owners.
Cheers, Dennis!

Rather than spending that £6k on an E39, you might be better off buying one for £5k and keeping the other thousand pounds ready for any work it needs.
And now, having said that, I'll take a moment to contradict myself.
I've had a £6k 530i Touring before, and that cost a fair whack to run while I had it. Lots of little niggly faults, and I didn't even bother rectifying them all before selling it on.
By contrast, I now have a £1300 540i/6 Touring. It needed £150 of welding to get through an MOT, has a couple of minor niggles, but that's it mechanically. So far it has cost buttons to run.
So, I guess what I'm saying is check it over very thoroughly.

for what its worth, i recently picked up a high spec 353i M Sport manual in black with cream electric m sport seats for 4k
had a few issues but after spending about 1k on bits it its now running 100% with no issues at all.
as above i would save a bit of cash for unforeseen consequence's, after buying mine, i knew it needed a new front bumper, new tyres and a few niggly bits correcting but a week later needed a new thermostat, valve cover gaskets, plugs and a good service lol, typical
wasnt too big a hit as i can do the work myself, but if your not so handy with a spanner be sure to keep some cash back! BMW Dealers arnt cheap, even at the half price rates the e39 falls into
the V8s are nice, and the instant torque is a warm welcome, but suffer from obviously MPG (although not too bad when your sensible) and a steering box instead of the rack.
if i had 6k now i would be on the lookout for a m sport 530i manual in the colour you want with the interior you want (watch out for the auto boxes, they are sealed for life and apparently have started to go at 120kish so make sure you get one thats either had it fixed or had the oil changed!).
new e39s come on the market pretty much everyday i found, they are extremely common and wont be long till a motor that ticks everybox comes along
also the preface lift 6 pots had an issue with the petrol over here in the UK, so i would personally play it safe and hold out for a facelift (+ you get a few nice additions/tweaks like the angel eyes and rear light clusters)
checkout the bmw5 forum and FAQ/Buyers guide before buying
fantastic car though and by far the best car ive owned so far for the money
gl finding one and hope to see you on the forum

that depends on what from the car?
but if you look there are some bargains about
this is mine

picked it up for around half your budget it needs some "tidying up"
so far ive fitted some new bushes and given it a service.
needs a good clean and polish inside and out but other than that its been very good.
however i would'nt want to run it as an everyday car at 18 mpg ish

excellent cars, ive recently bought a 540I Auto and love it. Or at least i did, i wasnt the most sensible purchase for living in an estate with a large hill and mix that with a heavy bout of snow.
So its on foot or not at all, the snow is now up to the bottom of the front numberplate since this photo a couple of days ago

This is actually another 5 that has landed and not moved in days

This looks nice (if its genuine) distance photos are odd though - should be able to pickup for £6500
