disco 3 transmission noise
Discussion
hopefully someone can help.
our disco 3 is coming up to 3 years old and consequently nearly out of warranty. We've had it since it was 6 months old and its always had an intermittent clonk when taking up drive. the symptoms...
slow down to say 5-10 mph for whatever reason (makes no difference if its for a corner or straight) then accelerate....
most of the time there is a smooth introduction of power, other times you a get a pronounced 'clonk' as the power is delivered.
Dealer has given a few explanations - nothing wrong with it, cant identify anything, 'they all do that'. I dont accept that a car that was 40 odd grand when new has a transmission noise like that as standard!
has anyone a similar problem or explanation?
cheers

Have a similar issue with my 06 RRS, so assuming the similar setup as your D3 I guess it's the same thing.
As you did, I asked the Dealer to look at and got similar responses to you.
Did a bit of test driving myself to work out exactly how it's induced, and came to the conclusion that putting on too much power when it's coasting at low speed causes it.
I've learned to live with it, though it is frustrating for such an expensive car.
Someone more technically minded will probably be able to define what is the actual cause, if as they say it's a characteristic then I would say it's a flaw in the setup.

This may not help but worth a shout.
My father has a 2005 model and it had a problem with not staying in gear when pulling away and clonking. Turns out a little plastic clip between the gear lever and gearbox linkage can break and cause the issue.
This was replaced (whole gear lever assembly needed to be removed) at some cost, and just over a year later has gone again, the dealer paid for some of the second replacement though I believe!
