Anyone finding Tom Tom maps a bit.. well.. rubbish?
Discussion
Specifically the updates?
I paid for updated maps very recently and they seem to have not noticed the slight (i.e MAHOOSIVE) modifications to the M4 J11, and there have been several other oddities when I've been out and about, it tried to send me down a dual carriage way somewhere near nottingham that was still being built.. massively behind the curve in some respects way too far ahead in others..
Not the mention the Points of Interests being just plain wrong... sent me to a Shell garge, which is currently a big hole in the ground, fair enough, that's a temporary thing, looked like it was being rebuilt. Several times I've asked for the nearest fuel and ended up at an ex-petrol station which is now just a 2nd hand car dealership or sometimes a nice new set of flats.
Best one was today, was on the road early and fancied some food, asked for the nearest little chef and it directed me to a non existant one on the A33, now I know for a fact it's been at least a decade since that was a little chef, it lay empty for a while then was set on fire and demolish about 5 years ago!!!
Seems they just dont ever update them!
Are there any Sat Navs that are actually updated properly? Dont mind paying for the privelege, lord knows Tom Tom charge a fair bit and its seems to be for a pretty naff service..
(and dont get me started on the "Live" traffic...)

Just to clarify I'm using a dedicated Tom Tom, not a smartphone so the PoIs are from Tom Tom.
I've downloaded NavFree and will give it a go, as with google maps, one of the good things about the Tom Tom is the bluetooth hands free and voice control. I know the hands free on my iphone is a bit naff, not even sure it does voice control. I suppose I could go for a parrot or something similar.

If the POIs are from the TomTom app on your PC, then you'll have to remember most are user-submitted, and if you'd like to update them you can do it yourself and submit them to TomTom, or tell the original creator that there's an error.
As for roads that are wrong - you can also add your own, basic, corrections to the maps. Personally, I don't bother with updated maps as it means I have to spend the next 6 months correcting the junction, turn & speed limit errors all over again. About once every 3 years I buy a completely new device instead (when the battery is usually dead) and pass the old one down the line to another member of the family.

I didnt realise the POIs were a community based thing, I thought they were part of the paid for service (especially the petrol stations). As for roads that are wrong - you can also add your own, basic, corrections to the maps. I dont begrude little errors in the maps, I come across small junctions with changed layouts all the time, no problems it's the biggies like I mentioned in my OP that I find annoying.
I'll plod on with trying the internet based ones on my iphone and see how they compare!

Some are, and they tend to me marked as such, however the majority are not, or are submitted by the company that the POI relates to. Unfortunately they tend not to get updated that frequently.if you have a live version (with the built in SIM) then you can use google maps to find stuff. On my 550 I dont bother with the crappy POIs any more. I just google for what I want then click 'navigate there' . I think this is only for x50 devices onwards, I know its not available on my 530.

I use a 740 Live and it has Google. It's the 740 Live I've got too.
You know, I take it all back..
I tried google maps, I couldnt make it do turn-by-turn on my iphone, can it?
I tried Nav free, fine the maps are great and more recent, it's got a VERY strange sense of direction when working out fastest/shortest routes. I tried it out on a few trips and It wanted to take me on same fairly spectacular detours. Tom Tom IQ routes is far better IMHO.
I resurected my old Nokia N71 and tried Nokia Maps, really not bad at all, but still slightly odd route planning like nav free.
I never spotted that google button on the Tom Tom! what a doofus. To be fair to Tom Tom PoI's the hole in the ground Shell and non-existent Little chef are both listed in google maps as well, I checked!
So in essence for my purposes it's still the best (of perhaps a bad bunch), and the PoI lists are all as crap as each other!

One other option is to load Third Party Custom POI files to your device and use these to suplement the locations supplied with the device, quite often the third party POI files are free and of considerably better quality in terms of location accuracy and being up to date. You can add Shell petrol or BP Petrol or any other brand type or simply add one file containing the whole lot, if you want a few sites listing as to where custom POI files can be found for free post back.
They are easy to install and a Go-740 can accept upto 255 individual POI files, within each POI file can be thousands of individual locations even including phone numbers - Mike

Have a look at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=POI... you can download them in batches, simply select the categories you need, download, unzip and put the resultant ov2 and bmp files in to the Western_Europe map folder on the device - Mike
