I have just got into Black Ops and while I love every second of it i'm not very good. At the moment my rank is 10. Everytime I play I get absolutly shredded to bits. Im generally quite good at games but seem to be stuggling with this. People seem to aim sop quickly whihc I cant seem to replicate.

I am sure there are other people in a similar situation

So what hints and tips do you guys have?

What weapons should I use and with what attachements?

What perks work best together?

Currently I'm manily playing Domination games.

I used to play HCTD on MW2.
But i can't get to grips with it on this game so we're currently all either playing HQ, Domination or TD (normal).
I don't enjoy this COD half as much as i did MW2.
I love the game mode "gun-game". It does'nt earn you any XP but by a country mile is the most fun game mode to play!
I have a running perk for playing private matches as i play with the gf's dad & my gf's kids online & with friends, so i run around with a scorpion, ballistic knife, semtex & flash bangs, double mags as the attachment.
In this instance i have sleight of hand, marathon etc on.
I have an assault rifle class which is above but i also have a claymore on & red dot sight & an anti aircraft rocket launcher thing.
I have another AR class but i have it as the opposite, so a red dot sight, suprressor, ninja, ghost & camo etc, for a game when theres a lot of air support.
Not really any tips there, im finding it a PITA to get to used to & i'm inceasingly playing gun game as it seems to be the only thing i enjoy no matter how badly im doing!

Three words - practise, practise, practise!!!!

I remember when I first started playing MW2 online and I was getting pasted, but the more you play, the quicker your reactions get, and the more you know the maps. Understanding the maps is half the battle, as you can predict choke points and where the oppo might be waiting to ambush/attack. Also in domination, it helps to know spawn points as you will know in what direction they will be coming from (not so relevant in Black Ops as spawn points are CRAP!!!)
Always try and get centre screen where you would be looking to aim. That way, you can ADS and fire simultaneously and hopefully get off your rounds before they do. Drop/jump shots can be learnt, but from my experience, drop shotting is cheap.

Help your team and take objectives where you can. Nothing worse than playing with a random team who dont help each other and dont try and progress your points.

Your only level 10 at the moment so most of the guns you have access to are pretty pants. Try to level up to about 20 where you will get the Galil assault rifle and the Ak47u submachine gun. I find these to be the best guns with sleight of hand.

Using better guns should help you in this game.

if your struggling try playing combat training mode, putting the AI players to hardened really has to sharpen your skills (as you dont get much time to kill them before your dead).. if you dont know the maps stick them to recruit for some easy target practise and the ability to run around the maps and learn them properly without being slotted every 2 seconds.
the other bonus is its easier to accrue points so you can try out other guns/weapons really quickly so not wasting precious $ buying guns/killstreaks in the real online game mode that you dont get along with. (which may not be useful to some people but i dont play that often so its been helpful to me!)

combat training is also nice to play when your getting nothing but disconnects/errors when trying to join a game, its nice to actually be able to play something sometimes! smile

+1 for the Galil & AK, probably the best two weapons in the game. Try playing Headquaters for a while, will level you up slightly quicker to get better weapons.

My Tips:

Try and use the suppressor as soon as you can. Until then though if you fire then move from that spot quick, as someone would have noticed you on their map.

When your shooting at someone don't stand still move to the left or right as you shoot using the left anologue stick whilst adjusting the aim with the right. This makes you harder to kill.

Use assult rifles until you learn the maps and then you can use the sub-machine guns.

When shooting from the hip make sure the target is in the centre of the screen (obvious but just saying)

Apart from that it's just practise really.

Good Luck

This.

I'm at level 35 now and I'm still using these two weapons, both with red dots and sleight of hand - the AK is very competent. I've also found claymores to be a good thing to have on maps you know well and where you can put them in a chokepoint.

Sleight of hand also gives you sleight of hand pro which speeds up your ADS - that seemed to give me a big kill rate boost.

When you're at a lower rank another good tip is to go for perks and weapons that you can actually use or give you a speed advantage given that often you aren't even going to fire off even a mag before you get killed - another thumbs up for sleight of hand, marathon or a flak jacket.

Try playing some Pure bare bones

I believe it's a much more balanced game type.
especially if you have not yet got the cod cash
for the weapons.

marathon, lightweight and steady aim are mine, but can easily be swapped for sleight of hand. Steady aim pro allows you to recover quicker from sprinting and blade swipes so can be useful if running and gunning.

Also, try using the stoner. Its the unlocked LMG you get when you buy all of them.It has the mobility of an assualt rifle but has the damage and fire rate of LMG. ADS is slightly slower, but with sleight of hand pro, it is the best gun I have used by some distance.

Play some team games like Domination or HQ - then you can still get points without getting kills. Play with friends who will *actually* bother to get flags / capture points, or just hope you're lucky when online with randoms.. as otherwise you wont win. Best tip for Domination is try to get and hold B flag as it is always the deciding factor in a match, try and keep two flags so the enemy are always spawning around the same side of the map, and you will be able to predict which direction they are coming in so wont get shot in the back so much. You will then have some idea of where they're coming from, and try defending flags too as you'll lose the game if you don't keep 2 flags long enough, and you'll also get extra points for getting kills whilst people are attempting to capture flags - If you have a strong team you can go for three, but whilst playing with random people online more often than not they'll cap a flag and run off, leaving it undefended. The opposition will then capture that flag, leaving theirs undefended and it becomes a constantly rotating game which is wk in my opinion smile

In contrast, I found the stoner to be pretty pants. All the LMGs on this game don't seem to serve their purpose of being for someone who is hankering down and defending a position.

Almost all the iron sights in the game are very good, meaning that the red dot/reflex sights are almost redundant - use dual mags instead. More ammo to start with, and every second reload is sleight of hand fast. With sleight of hand they're even quicker. Best advice is to try all the weapons and attachments and find what you're comfortable with. Don't waste money on reticle colours, designs or camos early on. My current favourites are AK-74u, AK-47, Commando and G11.

Perk 1 - Ghost pro combined with a suppressed weapon is great for obvious reasons. Team up with a Strela to take down enemy air support and help the team. Flak jacket is useful if you go on the offensive, as you are less likely to be killed by claymores and explosives. Scavenger is only useful if you must keep using your gun or are crap at conserving ammo - there are always enough guns lying around. Lightweight is probably the weakest of the first perks, but useful with marathon if you are into running around like a 10 year old on a sugar high. Hardline only really useful if you can't string a killstreak together to save yourself. As for the re-rolling ability of Hardline Pro....... rolleyes

Perk 2 - Sleight of Hand pro most useful for quick reload and ADS, Hardline great for punching through walls, and the pro ability reduces flinching when shot. Scout and warlord I have not really found too much of a use for, except the fast weapon swap of Scout Pro. Steady Aim Pro is OK, but best concentrate on ADS aiming rather than spraying and praying.

Perk 3 - Hacker or Ninja great with a 'sneaky' set-up, allowing you to bypass or hack enemy defences (Hacker Pro), or be totally silent (Ninja Pro). Tactical Mask Pro is great if you love aggressive rushing, as you are immune to your own flashbangs, concussion grenades or Nova gas. Marathon good if you like rushing. Second chance is as useless as in the previous games. The revive ability of the Pro upgrade could be useful if playing with helpful team mates, but is still not my perk of choice.

Killstreaks - if in a team game, use ones which will benefit the team, i.e. Spy Plane not RC-XD, napalm to cut off enemy routes, Blackbird. Don't select high killstreak rewards unless you are confident that you'll get them, otherwise you're just wasting spaces.

When moving round the maps, always go round corners carefully, preferably in ADS - the amount of people charging round corners is obscene, though gives me easy kills. Try to move round the edge of maps, in cover - rushing through the open will get you killed quickly!

Watch your minimap for enemies, and for friendly death notifications giving away silenced enemy players. A decent headset or headphones will give you much better situational awareness and up your game considerably.

As others have said, try holding down two flags in domination and trap the enemy near the third. A good domination team will end up with only two flag captures (the first two) and several defends and kills. Set up claymores/motion sensors near the flags, but most importantly, don't let the enemy get near the flags!

For other game types, have a look at Youtube videos and see how some of the better players approach the game (Hutch, Seananners, xJaws, Tejbz, etc) - they often talk about tactics, and the gameplay is often entertaining to watch!

Above all, enjoy!

ADS I think is looking down your sight. Excellent tips there Taffer, absoloutly right about keeping to the edges as I'm usually the headless chicken running and gunning in the middle of the map which does me no favours. I'd just like to add Woody's Gamer Tag to that list of You Tubers, he is by far the most informative on tactics & getting a good K/D http://www.youtube.com/user/WoodysGamertag . Also Pawn Star 4 Hire is great at giving weapons reviews http://www.youtube.com/user/iPwnstar4hire .

I've found warlord to be very handy. You can have 2 attachments on your primary weapon so you can have a suppresor and extended mags. The only way warlord doesn't work is if you have an under barrel attachment like the grenade launcher or shotgun.

2nd chance is good if you can get to pro as this enables team mates to revive you. They gain 50 XP and you don't get killed. I've managed to kill quite a few people with 2nd chance whilst they're reloading to finish me off.

If your looking for extra XP then make full use of the contracts. Some of them are very easy and you'll get at least 3 times the XP they took to buy.

As said before , keep practising and learn the maps.

Another quick question .

When you refer to a gun that has the 'grip'. What is this?

A vertical foregrip - in practice good for close quarters fighting - in CoD, reduces recoil on the guns. It's quite good when starting out or if using SMGs at range, but if you keep your fire in short bursts recoil shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Here's a foregrip in RL:
