Hawthorns Motorsport Press release for 2011 
After a very limited 2010 season following a highly successful 2008 season as overall Britcar Champions and Class 2 title holders, together with Class 3 honors and third overall in the 2009 Championship, Hawthorns Motorsport are back in the game for 2011.
2010 was a sabbatical year due to business commitments of the main drivers coupled with the search for a new car, but one event was undertaken via a shared drive in the Britcar 24 hr race at Silverstone in October, with a very successful outcome as the joint team claimed a third place overall finish with Spanish team mates in the Neil garner run Azteca Motorsport Porsche 996 GT3 cup car.
Hawthorns Motorsport drivers, Rod Barrett, Jan Persson and Jay Shepherd will be returning for a full 2011 MSA Britcar GT Endurance season. The team have recently purchased a Porsche 997 that they intend to once again run via Neil Garner Motorsport and challenge for the Britcar GT Class 3 title, whilst quietly keeping an eye on a potential podium finish overall.
“Britcar GT is a very level playing field that allows cars from any class to challenge for the overall title, we have done it once in our old 996 so we’ll try again in our new 997” stated Rod Barrett, driver and team owner.
Jan Persson added, “ The new car will be a challenge but overall it should be a less physical proposition with the sequential gearbox compared with our old H box 996, we will add blip control and ABS together with sat nav so Rod knows where he is going given his experience in the 24hr race where at one time he was convinced he was in Silverstone village such where the appalling weather conditions he drove in during his late night early morning stint”
Jan continued, “ Jay Shepherd will join us again as both Rod and I being, shall we say, mature drivers, prefer shorter stints these days and anyway, he’s very quick and makes up for our more sedate performances”
The 997 will have a totally new livery to reflect the teams new image, “Were keeping quiet about the new team livery as we are still developing the final touches, but it should be well received and who knows, we may even have a sponsor or two for 2011” commented Rod Barrett, “ We missed our racing in 2010 but business commitments forced our hand and when all is said and done, without the business side, racing would be virtually impossible to fund especially in the current difficult economic climate.

The Aspers Casino & MMC Motorsport Insurance sponsored Race Car Spares team will be there again in 2011 (for selected rounds) - but the Cosworth has been "retired" (again!) after a couple of tremendous seasons, to be replaced by BMW power. The new car gets delivered next week, and Denchy has the winter to work his magic!

Just looking at the regs for Britcar 2011 and i see they are allowing Porsche 996 cup and Ginetta GT4 in britcar production Seems a bit odd
Also 997 cup cars are in class 3 in GT and being classed as GT4 and will run against 996 cup and GT4 cars so a 997 should walk that class
So what will be the car to have in Britcar Production a 996 cup car dare i say

Unfortunately, Britcar Production ceased being about "Production" cars some time ago, the fact you need either a modified FIA GT4 spec car or a 996 Cup car to compete at the front bears testimony to this. Its a shame that with the exception of the 24 Hour Race, where several ex-Britcar Production runners such as the Integra's, MG ZR's, Diesel's etc reappeared, that there is no place where genuine production cars can compete in endurance events within the UK. The attendance at the 24 Hour shows there is an appetitie for it, but the continual raising of the bar in terms of the minimum level of performance required to compete in Britcar and rising costs means the average Civic, Integra, 120d, E36 M3 owner etc will have to look elsewhere.........

A 996 cup car is more of a production car than most of the cars running at the front in production....Quiet often this years top class production have been faster than class 3 in britcar also...
The 997 should always of been in class 3 if you look at power to weight so it now sits where it should be in the current class structure.
Team Lizard Motorsport are hoping to be in production class 2, little bit heavier than some of the competition but hoping that reliability will prevail!
We are still in talks with potential sponsors which as always will make the final decision as to whether or not we will be racing,
