I've not looked at the rears but on the front wishbone the bush seems to be hard up against the forward mounting on the chassis while the rear is packed with washers.
Would I be right in thinking that there should be a washer/spacer each side of the bush. Or is it like that for a reason?

your right poorpeet.the bush should be centrally located with one nylon washer at either end of it.the nylon washers were not fitted to earlier cars as std, only later ones.most people fit them when renewing bushes though as its a worthwhile and inexpensive improvement.

Wow, i noticed that on mine today whilst fiddling, spacers at back and hard against chassis at front, in fact a little rusty residue where the two rub, do you think we should worry?

this means that your bushes are fuct and need replacing. If a dealer is doing it, it's cheaper to get them to change the whole wishbone as they come with the bushes pre-fitted and are only £50 or so. Also get them to fit the thrust washers either side too.
