Off Road Jago-ing
Discussion
Hi All
Has any one been following the progress of the Countryside & Rights of Way Act which aims to ban all motorised vehicles from ancient roads???
Seek out the motorist lobby point of view at www.laragb.org Then contact the Rights of Way officer at your local Council office and ask for the relevant Definitive Map & Statement for your area. This will show the roads and tracks with vehicular rights- then get out there and drive them !!!
It seems that our government wants the countryside to be enjoyed providing it is done quietly. Only 4% of all off road tracks are currently open to vehicular traffic- it seems that the ramblers and walkers aren't satisfied with the other 96%, they want them all.
These ancient roads, classified as Roads Used as Public Paths RUPPs and Byeways Or Agricultural Tracks BOATs are roads in the full sense of the word requiring road tax, insurance and MOT on any vehicle using them.
Why people expect to walk on these (un-metalled) roads when they wouldn't walk down the middle of the local high street or bypass can only be guessed at. DO NOT confuse these routes with Bridleways which are not open to vehicles (unless you own the land they're on).
Motorists- Assert your right to Roam !!!
Cheers
Ian

As Ian says we need to register our support for keeping the byways suitable for vehicular rights of way open.
Drive ones that are clearly marked on OS maps after checking at your local definitive map archive (possibly library or council office) that it has rights of way. Also consider joining groups like GLASS who are actively fighting for our rights to have access to BOATS and other suitable lanes for vehilces.
DO NOT drive lanes with restriction notices (but lodge your objection to it being down graded)and DO NOT turn lanes into mud baths (4x4 off road days on off road courses away from green lanes are the place for playing in the mud).
Only drive in small groups of a maximum of 4 to 6 vehicles in going in groups. Be polite to anyone who confronts you and ensure you have evidence of your right to drive (copy of definitive map so you know where you are going). When possible avoid direct conflict and where required stump them by asking for their names etc if they are creating a scene.
Try visiting the GLASS site to gain extra info to help you out.www.glass-uk.org/
