In common with most of the UK right now, I'm just wondering whether to invest in one or the other of these, when I should have done so before the snow came down of course!

I cannot justify changing to a set of winter tyres and do not envisage driving in the snow much, but need something to get the car to the main road, so will want to take them off after a mile or so.

Has anyone experienced both systems (chains and socks) and can give a comparison?

Also a quick check shows chain sets from £35 to £300ish. Any advice on brands/cost would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Syd,

I have used snow chains for many years on trips to the alps and the grip is very impressive. They are a bit of a faff to fit but having seen people wrestling with snow socks I'd go for chains every time. If you're only going a mile or so just fitting one chain works fine. My set were about £40 and have been fine for about 6 ski holidays.

Biggest thing to remember is get yourself well practised at fitting them before the snow arrives.....otherwise prepare yourself for some seriously cold fingers!!

Can you get cheap chains for large tyres fitted under close arches?

I've also considered a pair of socks for the rear tyres to have in the boot to get me out of trouble and back to a main road if the weather turns bad whilst I'm out. Interested to hear anyones experiences with them.

Thanks guys.
I bought the socks - mainly for convenience. Typically, the snow disappeared as I entered credit card details into the website!
It looks like the snow will be back though so I'll let you know how I get on with them.
