Junior Porsche SUV Confirmed

Cajun is the name, cornering (the yummy mummy market?) is the game

Take a little bit of this...
Take a little bit of this...
Porsche is going ahead with its oft-rumoured junior SUV, to be based on Audi Q5 underpinnings and badged the Cajun.

The news emerged officially from a meeting of the firm's supervisory board yesterday, and it's expected the new model will be on sale by 2014.

"Under the working name Cajun, this efficient and sporty model will further expand the company's most successful segment worldwide. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the Cajun will also make a positive impact, offering typical Porsche features such as lightweight construction, dynamic handling and agility," runs the company statement.

...and a little bit of that.
...and a little bit of that.
"As a desirable entry model in the Porsche world, the Cajun will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars," the firm reckons.

Doubtless the newcomer will sell like hot cakes, and if that helps Porsche spend money on proper cars we're not going to grumble. As long as nobody in the marketing department asks us to believe the move runs true to the spirit of the Porsche brand's heritage, that is...

Coming up next - A1 sized Porsche shopping cart!

And so the downfall of the Porsche brand name continues.

No pleaseing the PH massive...

Make a new 911, cries of "it's the same as the last one"

Make a different car "don't like it, it's nothing like a 911".

Since they're damned if they do, and damned if they don't, my guess is that Porsche will make whatever car makes them the most money (beuing a business, and that)...

Taking a leaf out of Jeeps book and naming a car after an ethnic group I see. Doubt there will be many Cajuns driving Cajuns though.

Not quite. As long as the 911 successor is a rear-engined 2+2 sports car it'll be fine.

This, however, is a tarted-up Audi. I'll reserve ultimate judgement until Autocar et al get their hands on it, but from this distance it looks as credible as Nick Clegg.

It'll sell.

If Porsche are using the funds generated from these things to invest into their motorsport and top end GT3 / RS models, I really don't see the problem.

People like to see sports cars from Porsche. VW are moving them from a sports car firm to a prestige firm that sits somewhere between Audi and Bentley in the range.

Probably good for shareholders but it makes the world that little bit more grey.

Do you think the 911, Boxster or Cayman are any worse because of the Cayenne?

It's not necessarily VAG who are instigating this, the problem is each manufacturer has to reduce their average co2 across their range. Hence the baby Aston based on the Toyota.

/sarcastic mode on: hopefully Diesel and only FWD. It's the right thing to do in this market, innit? a mini Porsche SUV is exactly what the world needs, since the Ferrari one is taking longer than expected
