There is a worrying skew in the meeja.

I don't know if it were always the case, or whether the cosy relationship with Nu Labia enculcated certain view, but the socialist message is strong with most of them.

I think we've gone through a very dirty couple of decades in politics, largely from the left.

The tactic is to make some things off topic, like immigration, and discussions of a race. But they've gone further than that by recognizing alternate lifestyles, which embraces the welfare culture amongst other things.

In the event that you (verbally) attack "single mothers", then you are pilloried and your career destroyed (when they can).

So so much of this stuff is off limits, anyone who says something vaguely truthful is mindful that they will be labelled and have their career destroyed.

Speaking the truth is nothing more than censorship.

(But I think we've come full circle now - mainly as it's become so absurd).

+1 I think even the most brainwashed of middle England have had the veneer of Orwellian utopia and control gradually chipped away at. I tend to think that is as result of the fact that their false, credit fuelled romp through the last decade and a half has come/is coming to an abrupt end and the chickens of fiscal irresponsibility are very much coming home to roost which lets face it was always going to happen.

Then add to this scandalous revelation after scandalous revelation from MP's expenses to the banking crisis it has shaken the general populace to the point where they have no choice but to realise this is just getting beyond daft!

Essentially you can tell the biggest lies you wish to brainwashed morons as long as you keep them happy and brainwashed when they start to think for themselves again it becomes more difficult to shovel feed them st!...

Reality shows . . . people have been dumbed down to the point they only react to heavy stimulus, not facts which require them to think. The press does the thinking for them . .. most people will happily accept that.

I think the expenses thing has vindicated people's attitudes that they can lie and cheat in life AND expect to get away with it. If our political elite can lie and cheat, then why can't the man on the street? Why should Joe Bloggs Esq. be held to a higher standard than Joe Bloggs MP?

Bizarre really isn't it. The sentiments coming out over the last week or so about not having children if you can't afford it - and this has come from Labour and Conservative members if I recall correctly - has been echoed by everyone I've spoken to recently, from many different walks of life. The press and the Government seem to try and push a certain message as being the mindset of the "man in the street" - but I suspect the majority of the population (taxpaying population, at any rate) would completely disagree with the direction the press are taking.

Why should you have kids if you can't afford it?

Why should you expect taxpayers to foot the bill?

Time some important people in this country woke up and smelled the coffee, I think.

Fair comment I would think that there is an equal measure of folks who however are shocked into a more awake state and are feeling more outraged than entitled to duplicate it, just my thoughts.

I don't disagree. Many people are appalled. But then there will always be a section of society who will now feel vindicated.

Aye, I guess we just have to hope there are more that fall into the former category than the latter!

Agree entirely. I do wonder what the media actually thought the embassies would be saying?

The Wikileaks stuff seems incredibly tame so far.

I really wish I knew the answer to this.

I know that I will happily vote for a politician who simply tells the truth.

But even the police will shall we say cover up for certain things such as drink driving offences in certain parts of the country. It's quite sad when the truth is deemed unacceptable.

My Local paper is spouting on the Labour ran councils message of doom and gloom about facing a 30% cut come April 1st. Not once has it printed the truth that the council faces a 7% cut every year for 4 years totalling 28% or that the local authority has decided to cut its budget by 14%, 9% and 2.5% over the next 3 years.

Apparently Labour lies and spin are going to take a long time to wear thin.

It's always been here, people don't like being presented with the truth. A nice damp façade of a fib is much more cosy.

Twain knew the truth of thisbiggrin

Most writers regard truth as their most valuable possession, and therefore are most economical in its use.

A man is never more truthful than when he acknowledges himself a liar.

A lie can make it half way around the world before the truth has time to put its boots on.

Well the Lib Dems are happily keeping the Tories in power on the back of the lies the told the electorate leading up to the General Election...

Its endemic on all sides.

The press are not the crusading seekers of justice they once were, they now feed off PR, press releases and secondhand journalism.
This means many of them never leave their London enclaves and head out into the 'badlands' outside the M25. Consequently, their worldview is limited to what they, their friends and colleagues experience in the capital.

And the 'man on the street' in London, especially the trendier 'meeja' parts of London is not representative of the rest of the country.

Similarly, today's politicians are almost all career politicians, therefore their worldview is that of a politician, not a member of the general public. Their only contact with 'civilians' is at their surgeries. Have you ever been to an MPs surgery? Not many people have, unless they have an axe to grind, a grievance that needs airing or they're lonely, mental or both.

This results in the same, inevitable outcome - a distorted view of the 'man in the street' somewhere between their constituency loonies and their political colleagues.

There's a fine line between incisive, intelligent insight and a sweeping statement which ignores complexity and lacks in-depth understanding.

Not making a political point and I'm suspicious of the media agenda. But I don't automatically regard the views of, for example, Prince fecking Andrew as 'the truth'.
