I'm looking at buying a 300Tdi Disco and using it to tow a car trailer for commercial use. I know that as the combined weight will be over 3500kg I will need a tacho, although fortunately I am exempt from O-licence rules.

The gubberment websites and VOSA are less than helpful on the subject, I went down to my local VOSA place in Redruth, got fobbed off and told to ring VOSA Exeter to speak to a Traffic Examiner, who gave me the number of an Examiner in Redruth, whose phone is switched off.

I need to know:

Rough costs of fitting a tacho - preferably in Cornwall
Driving hours - what rules do I go by? I presume that as i'd be on tachograph then EU driving rules apply.

Thanks

No idea how much a tacho is, but I drive a 17seat xlwb minibus with a very large 6 wheel ifor williams trailer, fully loaded is probably 5-6 ton all told, I am allowed to drive 4.5hrs then a 45min break then another 4.5hrs, keep below these hours and you will be fine

Also if you get a digital tacho then you will need to apply for a tacho card from the DVLA!

I have a digital tacho card already smile

I guess you're not using the minibus for commercial work? Minibuses fall under different rules regarding use and hours.

I am indeed using it for commercial work, its part of a mountain bike park so I fall under the EU driving hours, as long you remember to push the 45min break on the tacho after 4.5hours driving then stop driving after another 4.5hrs in afternoon.

Are you using it more than 50km from base as it could be exempt ?

You don't need a digital tacho in a 300 TDi and calibration is every 2 years with a major check at 6 years

vehicles registered before may 06 can still use the old analogue tachos with the wax charts.

No O licence is required as long as the unladen weight of the trailer is below 1020kg, a single car trailer would have to be made out of lead to get anywhere near that

You have to use the tacho when towing the trailer and are subject to EU drivers hours rules which are

4 1/2 hrs driving then a 45 min break or 1 1/2 hrs driving and a 15 min break then 3 hrs driving and a 30 min break or any combination of.

you used to be able to take 3 15 min breaks but they've stopped that so now it's 15 then 30 but NOT 30 then 15

if you drive for say 3 hours then take a 45 min break you can then drive for 4 1/2 hrs then 45 min break then 1 1/2 hours

2x a week you can drive for up to 10 hours but you have to lose time next week as the max permitted driving hours is 90 in 2 weeks

after 9 hours driving you need to take 11 hours rest

when you're not towing but still driving commercially you need to keep a log of hours driven, the max is 10 hours

if you're not doing anything like 9 hours a day it may be more transparent if you just put a chart in every day then VOSA won't be able to moan at you if they stop you.

You also have to take 45 hrs break after 6 days of work but I don't know how that would work with a disco as it's a passenger car as well.

You'll be lucky to get a straight answer out of VOSA if you ask a complicated question they'll just fall back on "it's up to the courts to interpret the law"

The analogue tachos are radio CD sized so will fit in the dash, mine used to be under the passenger seat in my Navara.

I'll put my disclaimer in here, this info is as I understand and implement it in my business, you should check for yourself before running a business using it but I believe it to be correct.

Thanks for that.

I think i'll knock the idea on the head - as it'd only be part time I doubt the return would cover the outlay.
