SWMBO has had the 54 plate 525d for about 6 weeks. I hopped in for the first time in a while and had a little look to see what kind of mileage she'd been getting (it's our first diesel).... and she's managing an average of 29 mpg.

Now is it just me or is that a bit low? Is there likely to be an issue with the car or is it just her driving style? (she isn't likely to have been hooning about as 99 time out of a 100 she's got the baby on board)

I've got a 2005 525d Msport (Saloon) which my wife uses daily on her 32 mile round trip to work and she's only getting between 31-32 Mpg, she's also not known for her lead foot either. I've come to the conclusion that having an automatic is the main reason for this because I used to get nearly 10 mpg more out of my E39 equviliant.

My wife gets at least 44 mpg from hers on short runs,on a long run it will return over 50 mpg.

What sort of driving? If it's accurate (and personally I don't trust the computer) then 29MPG sounds fair enough for stop-start driving in slow-moving traffic, with lots of braking then accelerating (back up to 25mph). I've had 30mpg from my 320d driving like that.

I don't trust the computer on my 520d, or at least it doesn't behave like Audi or VW average mpg displays. I'll get around 50mpg on a run, then if I do some short trips it'll come down to ~35mpg. However if I do another long trip, a few hundred miles where I'd be certain I was getting 50mpg again, the average mpg doesn't seem to go up. Reset the mpg and see what happens.

Just check you are not set to US gallons in the iDrive. It's under Settings and called something like Units.
