Hi all this is my first thread my names Pete and im 21, ive been driving the work van for about a year but i dont own my own car so im looking for my first car ive saved up about £3000 now ive been paidbiggrin to spend on one i want something that is nippy, very reliable and that has fairly low insurance ive narrowed it down to two cars a Suzuki Ignis Sport and a Toyota Yaris t sport but realy cant decide which to go for , they both have great reviews from what i can tell they both have a very similar 1.5 ltr engine producing near the same bhp, am i right in saying the yaris handles slightly worse than the ignis but the yaris is better built, and it will be the phase 1 yaris 2001-2002 that im looking at the phase 2s are too expensive and the impression i got from the yaris owners forum is that the phase 1s are better anyway

anyone have an opinion on which to get

Welcome! biggrin
I have never owned a Yaris or a Ignis, but I do have a friend who owns an Ignis Sport - apparently it's a good laugh, and not too many in the country so might have that slight bit of rarity factor! This may have an impact on parts though? I believe aftermarket parts are a bit thin on the ground too.
If the Yaris forum suggest the phase 1 is the best one however, it may be worth trusting the experts' opinions?
Sorry I couldn't help any more, just my opinion smile

No, definitely the Yaris T Sport. But I haven't driven either so I wouldn't know.

Sorry could have been the way I worded my response too!
I say look into the Ignis Sport, maybe take a couple of test drives of both cars and see which one YOU prefer smile Iggy SPort might be the fun option though!

My girlfriend has an Ignis Sport. It's not the must refined or comfortable car in the world, but great fun for what it is.

Have a look at the Kia Rio diesel. I know all the 'kia what a load of crap' but they actually aren't. It has about 250 ibft of Torque so can accelerate quite well. Gets good MPG about 50ish. And it is a Kia so the insurance will think 'what young driver will want to drive fast in that.

And it is actually a bit of a looker for a cheap super mini. Oh and pretty much everything comes as standard. Well it did. Try to get one around a 55 reg. The LX has alloy wheels Aircon and a decent radio.

If you're after a car that is good value for money then other people's ignorance and misconceptions can help. I drive a Skoda so I understand.

you say that but you should bloody see what my dad can do with the thing. Lets just say I have seen some Golf GTI drivers looking very unhappy. The 250 ibft of Torque really helps.

rofl Yes, with its spectacular 0-60 speed of 11.5 seconds you'd certainly embarrass a Golf GTI in a diesel Kia Rio... (173 lb/ft of torque btw)

Is there much difference in insurance? If so I'd go for the cheapest to insure.

Yeah. Ah it is 235Nm not 250ibft. Still it is pretty punchy. Test drive one. You will be surprised. The pre facelift ones should be getting pretty cheap now and there seems to be loads of parts available for them. The ride you will also find is quite comfy. And amazingly it seems to swallow it's own size in boxes. (getting furniture for my office. Flat pack stuff but big boxes. Car was completely stuffed full. But just test drive one. Remember though it has always been a budget car, but Kia have improved hugely since the days of the Kia crapbox (Pride).

Btw the official figure is massively underestimating the 0-60. It is around high 9s to low 10s. Oh and the insurance group is 16. Although now they go up to 50 sooo.... Tis quite low

the ignis is group 9 the yaris is group 7 when i got a quote for both the yaris was £2006 and the ignis £2358 (ripoff) so thats about 30 extra a month for the ignis which isnt that bad

i still cant decide ill have to test drive them both

I felt compelled to make my first post to say that I own a Yaris T Sport (P1). It's a cracking little car, but hopefully I will be upgrading to something bigger in a couple of years.

One thing that bothered me about it though was the ride height. Felt like a little 4x4. A set of Tein S-Tech springs sorted that out. One of my friends cousins had a yellow Ignis Sport, looked rather nice too with the netted Recaro seats. I have never driven one, but in terms of performance they are supposed to be identical.

Sounds like a test drive will be the best way for you to decide then.
