My journey to work today was pretty well fine apart from the outside lane being unused due to a bit of snow; when lanes 1&2 dropped to 30mph I moved out and could safely do 40, so here's a suggestion for you to debate.

If all PHers did their best to use the outside lane it would very quickly get cleared (OK, not if you're on the A9 and it's 2 feet deep, but on the M25 for instance where it's 1 - 2 ").

Even if you can't get fully over there, if each car went a tyre width across then after about 10 cars it would clear quickly and you can easily get all 4 wheels back onto a clear surface if you need to.

Interesting idea.

I always make a point of trying to keep my wheels out of the cleared area and try a clear a wider path. Obviously only where it looks safe to do so.

My dad's been doing this in his work van for years. There again, he's Scottish and in general folk do stuff to make everything work better up there.

Agreed, but if you went just a gnat's to the right and everyone else did the same it would clear.

Don't be stupid!! JUST BUY PROPER 4-SEASON TYRES or winter tyres... then you can brake and keep direction, unless driving like a pratt!

I would strongly object to everyone using the outside lane. I use it as a Landrover drivers only lane - even if it's three feet deep

How far would you get before some self righteous van/lorry/silver-company-car driver decided you were queue jumping and blocked your progress?

They've tried in the past - but their Euroboxes can't climb out of the slush onto the snow covered section so they do the slide of shame back into the slush tracks.
