Love the sound of both these types of car but why does the F2 sound so much better than the S2000?

As far as I know they have similar engine spec but sound different. The F2's sound more "on it" and angry. If you could combine the F2 sound with 4wd then I think you would be on to a winner.

First video shows some S2000 cars(couldn't find anything better) and the second is F2.

Fwd to 1.33 if you want to miss the intro music on the 1st.

Them F2 Kit cars do sound amazing! There was an F2 306 Maxi up at Smeatharpe the other week and the engine just screamed, the locals must have hated it!

i haven't checked but wouldn't be surprised if s2000 have a rev limit in the regs, the F2 rules had no rev limit which is why they screamed so much and the ultimate french ones produced so much power, a good chunk more than a BTCC car of the same era for example

Also F2 cars didn't have intake restrictors and a lower minimum weight limit. By the end of their time they weren't cheaper than group A cars, which was their original intention.

F2 cars were fwd, so as soon as the driver even looked at the throttle they would wheelspin, and the revs would just fly up, making the engines sound almost inertia free and VERY revy. 4wd S2000 cars (which are also heavier by some margin that the old F2 cars) just sound a little bit "dulled" by comparison.

I was at Smeatharpe and heard that, stunning bits of kit the old F2 cars, and almost as good was the old S1600 class with Corsa etc in.

F2's were amazing, the rs2000 of Gwyndaf Evans on the Rally of wales 96 noise echoing through the trees was immense cloud9 . The megane had the looks to go with the sound.

It's actually a BRM V16 (the captions on the clip are wrong, as are the pictures of the car...) but it's still amazing to listen to !!

It's actually nicked off the CD that came with the Nick Mason / Mark Hales book called Into The Red.

He is still going and winning national events in group n.

I remember the 1996 event well, I've got a VCR of the Top Gear Review. Gwyndaf reshaped that escort bouncing it off a massive tree stump.

I remember marshalling on the RAC (as it still was then)in teh late 90s - '99 I think but it might have been '98 - and being blown away by the sound of the S1600 cars in particular. I remember being very impressed by the pure speed of a little red Saxo as it screamed through a very fast right hand corner in a beatifully controlled, inch perfect drift through the forest - far quicker than many of the group A Evos and Imprezzas which abounded on teh entry list.

So impressed was I that I trawled down the entry list we had been issued with to see the driver was one S Loeb - destined for great things.....
