The key for my E60 still works but the battery must be dying because I have to be very close to the car for the remote locking to work now. They are sealed units and the battery charges whilst the key is in the ignition - I guess they have a natural life and mine is coming to an end.
I've just dropped into a local dealer and a replacement key is £130.00!!!
Am I the only one who thinks that is an effing joke?
Make a sealed unit if you must but to charge that much for a replacement in the event the battery dies is a bit cheeky. The key for my Porsche might look crap but allows me to change the battery if required for about a quid.
I think I'll dig out the spare key and use that one.

Think mine is going the same way, do you have to buy from the dealers or can you get the blanks of the likes of ebay and have them done from there?
thing is the ones on ebay are newer style key, or does this not matter?
I'd like to know of this is possible. I've seen he blanks for sale too and always wondered if this was a viable way of doing it.thing is the ones on ebay are newer style key, or does this not matter?
Anyone?
ridiculous. what's wrong with a good old fashioned key ffs? i have the original key on my car, it's almost 29 years old and still works fine....i had a replacement cut last year for a fiver, that works too.
it's f
king stupid, i agree. just to change a bloody battery. thing is, they know it'll need doing every x number of years.

The DIY guide is good if that is your sort of thing - I tend to limit my DIY to things involving a hammer only - anything too fiddly has me shouting and screaming pretty quickly (Besides mine is the newer, rectangular key).
If anyone does have any joy with an eBay key (they seem to be around £30) and dealer coding I'd be interested.
My car is due a service shortly - probably around January and I'm taking it to a specialist in Stockport rather than the dealer for the first time - I'll ask them about it then.
In the meantime I'll either get close to the car or use the spare key.

I took my 8er to Baymow a few times and always found them to be knowledgeable chaps. Cheap too and full of suggestions.
Because I work in central Manchester I now use BMTec. Again, very good.
Either way OP you should be fine.

I've been once before for a foglight and they were helkpful and decent value.
8er

I've had this before. Using the key regularly to charge it helped, and this fixed one which completely died once http://www.programyourkeys.com/Program_Car_Keys_-_...
