SLK 320 ASSYST warning message - help please

My Wife has started to get a strange warning on the ASSYST in her 2001 SLK 320. The car was serviced recently, and the warning is not of an impending service. The message is a graphic of an oil can with the word "HI". It only seems to happen occasionally and clears itself after a short while. I suspect either high oil temperature or high oil level? I've searched the owners manual and other booklets, and looked on the internet but can't find a definitive answer. So I'm hoping someone in PH world can solve the mystery. I really would have thought the owners manual would have had the answer, but I guess they just want you to contact a dealer.

Maybe return it to the servicing garage and ask them to drain a little bit of oil. To much oil can cause issues due to the crank churning the oil in the sump.

I concur. Apart from a confusing comment 'Do not confuse the service indicator with the engine oil display', there is nothing in the owner's manual about the oil level check, but the indication you have seen means that the oil has been overfilled. Whoever did the service failed to complete the oil change with sufficient care.
To check the oil level, when the engine is cool turn the key to the pre-start position, then wait about for 15 secs until an oil can symbol appears. Then press the odometer reset quickly twice and 'ok' should appear in the Assyst window - if 'lo' or 'hi' then the level needs to be adjusted.

I WOULD NOT DRAIN THE OIL.
As long as the garage used the correct amount of oil.
and that it has recently been serviced within a 2 week period then, leave it as it is.
it is very common for this to happen on your model soon after the service.
BUT if the light does come on after 2 weeks of good usage driving, then i would drain a very little amount.

Thanks to you all for the responses. The car was actually serviced in September and has only started showing this warning in the last week or so. It only comes up very occasionally and first did it on the Motorway. I haven't seen it myself, so can only go on what my Wife tells me. Due to my working pattern it looks like I won't get the chance to look at the car until Thursday. The car doesn't cover a lot of miles so hasn't clocked up much since the service though - a few hundred at most. I'll check the level and if it's OK then I'll give it a while and see if it settles down. If it's low or high then it's going back to the garage that did the service. It's a place that she and several others I know have used for years and he's actually very good. If he's done something wrong then I'm certain he'll sort it out for her.
