You really need to join the Owners Club and ask The Montreal Register everything you can FIRST!!

2.5 Quad Cam V8's with mechanical injection and dry sump are not the easiest home maintenance projects!!
But sound absobloomingfantasticarama when all 8 are going at once.

They are meant to be a good drive. Maybe not the last word in roadholding as they are based on the standard 105 Coupe chassis, but still very good nonetheless, and highly regarded in their day.

I thought they were considered flawed in their day? - an unhappy compromise between cruiser and sportscar.

My father had one - you need to tread VERY CAREFULLY. If properly looked after and maintained on a scrupulous "preventative" maintenance programme then you`ll probably get away with it.(It would be a massive assistance if you were a talented engineer!)

The styling is looking better as it gets older and they have a groovy interior but the very best bit is the fantastic 33-derived engine which sounds absolutely magnificant! (when all is well). They are over weight and under chassised (?) tho`.

I had a go in one last year. Looks fabulous in the metal, makes a splendid noise and terrific fun to drive - though it doesn't have the precision of the smaller Alfas. More a GT than a sports car.

Dinkel,

I have owned one for the last 2 years and have had no problems but buy a lemon and you'll need deep pockets. The comments on here are pretty accurate and the old girl sure has some style, and a pedigree engine.

However don't get the idea she'll mix it with modern performance stuff through the twisties as in standard form they are undertyred. They are however still pretty quick in a straight line.

I love it and if you have an inkling go for it....

I'm pretty sure my Dad had one of these in the 70s in Bahrain. I'll confirm it with him tonight!

I seem to remember him mentioning the exhausts are very low at the back and tend to get knocked every time you go over a speed bump. The roads in Bahrain weren't that good in the 70s and he used to regularly need to repair them! He's never mentioned anything else bad about it though

He wishes he'd never sold it to some guy who shipped it back to the UK so it may be knocking about here somewhere!

Here's one reving:

and one driving:

Sound's fantastic and more like an American V8 than an Italian one (not that that's a bad thing!)

V8 sounds bigger than the 2594 cc it is. 200 hp @ 6500, well are you sure this is the Montreal engine? It imagined a Ferrari Dino / 308 like roar . . .

There's one which goes to a lot of the Alfa shows owned by Trentside Sportscars. It's got four twin choke Webers on it instead of the fuel injection and some different exhausts and it sounds like a mix between a DFV and a small block Chevy.

Which is nice.

It's from this website:

www.alfamontreal.info

(under the engine section)

The site claims to be "Dedicated to Alfa Romeo's most exotic series production automobile" so I'd like to think it's correct. I'll play it to my dad and see if he recognises it.

Well, Dad confirmed he did have a Montreal in the early 70s in Bahrain. He brought it off a guy out there then sold it a few years later to a guy who shipped it back to the UK. His words on the sound files were "could be...." It's been nearly 30 years since he's heard one so not really supprising he can't remember!. He dug out this photo of his one taken in Bahrain:

It had gone a bit red, so I tried my best to photoshop it back to life! The car's supposed to be bright orange like the one at the top of this page.

PS talking about this to him is making him wish he'd never sold it!

Subsequently Autodelta made a small number of higher performance hybrid engines comprising a combination of 33 and Montreal parts. The 3-litre (2997 cc) variant of the standard 2593 cc engine had a single-plane steel crank. A 3-litre Group 4 racing Montreal shown by Autodelta at the International Racing Car Show in London in January 1973 was claimed to develop 370 bhp at 9000 rpm.
