Corsa 1.2 fuel pump replacement

Chaps,

I'm changing the fuel pump on my brother's Corsa 1.2 (a beast ).

We've put the new pump in, but after replacing the o-ring, I can't get the metal cap to sit low enough to allow the locking ring to go round.

Has anyone done this job before who might offer a morsel of advice?
