I've been watching this story unfold as i returned from diving hol in Sharm the week before the attacks on 1 Dec.
It seems to be turning into a real life 'jaws' scenario with officials parading a white tipped oceanic shark that has now been caught by a fisherman saying that it is responible for the attacks, bearing in mind that 4 people have been v seriously injured.
A dive instructer who was cicled by a shark and then witnessed it attack a snorkeller is addament that it is the wrong shark !
He apparently saw it from v close range !
News says that 2 sharks ,a Mako and the white tipped are being kept at a marine park and will be released back out into the ocean (the shark looks pretty dead in the pic tho)
How stupid can it be to release a shark that has attacked 4 people in the same day..it obviously regards us as food and needs destroying imo although plenty will no doubt disagree.
Strangely on my last dive a fellow diver was sure he had seen a large shark which had followed him as he came to the surface, no one else had seen any thing and his claim was dismissd, but prehaps ??
Meanwhile i believe the sea is still out of bounds .

It has been known that Russian dive centres in this area have been baiting the fish, it was only a matter of time until the st hit the fan.

Both shark are dead, autopsy confirmed that the White tip they caught was not the attacker, an the other was far to small to be capable of this.

IMO the sharks have done nothing wrong, yes it is a sad case and people have been hurt, which is very unfortunate. If you feed an animal, it will then rely on you for food, when the animal is hungry and you do not have food it reverts back to instinct.

I am sorry for the victims, maybe they didn't do anything wrong, but hopefully after this people might start taking notice of the red sea rules.

Well said - the phrase Do Not Feed The Animals was never more apposite in this instance.

Agree 100%. Those people should not be allowed anywhere near the civilised world...although I apply that term rather loosely to Sharm...

Football chiefs are playing down rumours that the sharks involved are ones specially trained by the English F.A.

Bloody hell, this is jaws in real life !
Reading the reports it says fishermen have been chucking chum out to attract the rogue sharks to be caught, but then feeding the sharks is being blamed as the reason for the problem in the first place. Surely this will attract even more sharks into the beach area.
Lot of conflicting info aswell.
Marine biologists say it is completely unheard off for a shark to do multiple attacks like this, it would appear that Sharm has a major problem on their hands.
I just hope that this oppotunity to learn about shark behaviour wont be wasted
Time to call in Matt Hooper.

Having come back from Sharm recently, I think it will have a massive impact on the tourist numbers, I personally would only go back for the diving/snorkelling, but since something like this, I would rather stay in the pool biglaugh

I pretty much disliked everything about Sharm except the sea and marine life so im sure companies/hotel owners out there are really concerned to say the least.

Lot of bullst stories about this around. One story was a bunch of snorkelrs who saw a shark, st themselves then cut themselves really badly scrambling over the coral then claimed it attacked them rolleyes

There has been 4 attacks to date not including the Marsa Alam attack last year these have been identified as Longimus (oceanic white tip) and a Mako which is pretty rare in red sea. The behaviour being seen is as expected not normal for this type of shark, its not mating season and its around about now that they migrate south so what this shark is doing hanging around is unkown however humans may now seem like easy prey so it has the taste.

It is illegal in Sharm and Dahab to feed fish for various reasons however russian tourists (Although not limited to it mainly is) have zero respect for the reefs and for the laws of the country and continue to a) trample over reefs b) feed fish. The feeding fish thing causes lots of little bait fish to flap about on the surface and just outside the reefs there is huge drop offs into the blue its not surprising that large palegics come up to investigate. The major downside to this is that sharks will now be pulled out of the water and needlessly killed due to stupid snorkelrs having zero respect for the marine environment.

For an upto date reference with no bull st check out the red sea forum on scubaboard. Posting from pro divers who are onsite with facts only.

People go into the ocean well aware of potential dangers, Im sure a lot more snorkelors die from drowing than any shark attack, lets hunt out those killer snorkels!!

I wish they'd leave the sharks alone and stop the stupid hunts, it's disgusting this is allowed to happen, the shark was behaving normally and so they hunt and kill it?

I always enter the sea knowing the potential dangers, I have done shark dives without a cage with hammer heads, tigers, raggies, and would never expect the sharks to be hunted if they carried out their natural behaviour, I accept the risks.

It is strange how more attacks seem to be occuring, I wonder whether ocean temperatures have changed recently? they might be seeing some big Great Whites before long, and we'll have a Jaws scenario where the hotel owners try to convince guests it's still safe to swim.
