So yeah, currently driving a 1.4 Mk3 Astra.. Nearly 18 Years old now and i'm fed up of the shed!

I get a bonus from work in March and SHOULD Have around 800-1200 Ish to spend on my second car.. Needs to be insurable and somewhat newer.

I will be modding it slightly to how i want it looks wise, i am capable of doing most stuff myself, including maintenance.

I'll be 19. I wont have a years NCB. No points.

So far i've come up with a few options, all are insurable, i check quotes every now and then smile

Looking for other suggestions to check out/add to the list to keep an eye out for. Cheers. smile

So yeah with a budget of a grand in mind.

So far:
1996-2002 Seat Ibiza - 1.4/1.6 - Really cheap insurance... And kinda like em.

2000-2004 Renault Clio - 1.6 - Not a great fan buy they aren't too bad.. If one came up at the right price i wouldn''t say no.

1999-2001 Ford Cougar - 2L Zetec - Insurance is around the 2K Mark, considering im paying 1700 for a 1.4 Astra im more than happy to pay 2K For a Cougar, always liked em since my dad had his.

1997-2002 Ford Focus - 1.6/1.8 Zetec/Ghia - Also really cheap insurance for what they are, and the 3 door ones are really nice looking, hella common though frown

Mk3/Mk4 Golf - 1.4/1.6 - Nice/Sensible cars, Common though frown

BMW 316 - 1.6 - Higher ish insurance... RWD and really nice cars though..

1993-1997 Honda Civic - 1.3/1.4 - JDM, Cheap and fun :P Common though

Mk2 Golf, 3 Door - Nice cars but a bit old, still tempting!

Dont want:
Vectra
Another Astra
Anything stupidly common.

Any ideas welcome'd and looked at, cheers biggrin

Yeah i'm aware at how common they are which puts me off but they are probably the best bang for buck around the 1K Mark at my age, especially the Golfs/Focus'

Cant get insurance on an MX5 Under 3 Grand rofl... frown

And i preffer the Cougars to the Pumas :P Plus a 2L Zetec Cougar is marginally cheaper to insure than a 1.7 Puma and the cougars look better!

Gotta agree on the Puma, fantastic cars.

MX-5 is great too, got myself one when I was 20 but had a couple years NCB, even then the insure wasn't cheap.

Who you getting insurance quotes through? Admiral were always very competitive for me. Paid £900 at 20 on a W-reg MX-5 1.8i with 2 years NCB.

Puma is a FAR better car than the Cougar.

Yeah MX-5 Is out of the question because of insurance.

And i'd take a Cougar over a puma anyday :P About the same price to buy and i much preffer the Cougar.

I much preffer the cougar biggrin Personal prefference.

And i'm trying everywhere. 20 Years old with 2 years NCB is a massive difference to 19 and no years NCB.

MX-5 Is out of the question.

I'd say Puma.

Just the other day my dad and I were discussing how fresh they look for their age.

I'd have one in a heart beat.

I'm going to guess at this point you haven't driven either.

The Cougar isn't a BAD car, its just that the Puma is an extremely good one.

Plus you can get the Puma as a 1.4 which would probably make the insurance less horrendous.

I drove a cougar for a month after i passed before i released the insurance was rape since it was the 2.5 V6.

I loved it, i preffer bigger cars and the cougar was so nice to drive, the 2L Zetec ones are the same engine as in the mondeos, reliable and not too bad on fuel.

Pumas just dont appeal to me.

Do you have a nice insurance broker?

If so, call them and ask what cars you can get insured for 1k (or whatever your limit is)... I did this a few years ago (ok, it was a long time ago now....) with a list of about 18 cars, they just went through and said yes/no etc..

Well, I've owned Mr2s (MK1s and 2s), TVR S1, TVR 350i, TVR Chimaeras, Lotus Elise etc.. and yet I still enjoyed a drive of a Puma (hired one for a day many moons ago), if you haven't driven one, try it?!!?

Can I ask how you did that, given this statement in your OP

Here's an example of what can happen if you choose not to declare modifications:

I would declare them, i'm not an idiot.

But i'd intend to buy/insure the car at first as standard, i wouldnt have any money to put into it for the first half a year or so anyhow.

The 1.7 is actually a 1.7 not a 1.6 you know that right? Engine designed specially for the Puma
