7 months after the SBC went bang the new LS7 started for the first time this morning! Fired first time and runs a dream. Just letting everything cool down and then check/tighten everything. Reminds me of 9 years ago when the SBC fired to life.

I am very happy!!!!!!!

Well done.
Now we wait to hear if it was worth the effort.
I know in your case the old engine went bang but the comparison is still valid.

Heres a comparison steve/guy.

My car hasnt been started for 3 weeks - battery on the conditioner.

switch on - fuel system primes -press starter - engine starts IMMEDIATLY! and ticks over without a touch on the gas pedal.

mmmmm nice

The LS's are good but not worth swapping just coz you feel like a change. Both Guy and myself sort of had our hands forced. But if you find yourself in a similar position, I wouldnt look back at the sbc.

Will let you know when finished but as Dave said it was two degrees this morning, took the plugs out to pressure the system, added fuel and started within 2 secs and sat idling better than the sbc ever did- very impressed. Does anybody know a OBD2 reader that works on the AS wiring and ecu. Want to check everything is working ok.

Congratulations.

I have never had the experience of a SBC in the Ultima. The reason I was keen to buy one with an LS was because of the trials and tribulations of many on this forum.

My puny LS2 starts first time, every time, without touching the throttle. Idles smoothly and is so well mannered it enables you to concentrate on your driving with confidence.

It will probably cost nearly twice as much to change from an SBC to an LS rather than replace like with like but if you like to drive your car and want to be able to venture out with confidence then I think it is worth the extra.

Another track day beckons in 10 days time before my refresh of gearbox, body and chassis. I know I want more power but that may have to wait a while.

From my personal experience I can highly recommend the "ElmCan" systems which connect to the OBD2 port: www.obd-ii.de/kabelec.html (site is available in english, see lower left corner). You can choose between different types, I used the ElmCan with a WLAN interface which transmits all vehicle data via WLAN either to your Iphone or your PC.
There are many apps to display the data, I really liked "Rev" for the Iphone: www.devtoaster.com/products/rev
I think they`re quite reasonably priced and had more than enough information (at least for me).

Cheers,
Sven

Well after months of doing very little (painting the wheels)the car is back on the ground.
The new teflon lined clutch slave has wasted a few hours today as I thought it was not working- turned out that it was working perfectly I just did not believehaow little effort it needed- I would suggest this to everybody.

Just need a trip to Charles Dunn for a spanner check, aircon gas and then MOT- cant wait to see how the LS7 feels!
