engine turning over, not starting?
Discussion
im trying to get the 2008 R1 engine in my kit car started, but its just turning over.
there is fuel and sparks, so it should start. and while cranking it makes a poping/coughing sound, and a little bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust, and a bit of a smell.
my thought is the battery doesn't have enough power to start it, but im using a 60AH car battery, which has been charged for a couple of hours, so it should have enough power to start a bike engine?
does this sound like a battery problem, or do i have bigger problems?
cheers

The engine was last run about 2months ago when i was taken from a bike.
There shouldnt be any immobiliser problems as far as ive been told.
I dont have any easy start but have tryed dripping petrol down the intake but just get lots of big bangs.
Ive got the battery on charge now so will see if it starts in the morning after a nice long charge.
Hopefully its just the battery doesnt have enough power to crank enough, also the battery has been in the shed for about 5 months so it probably needs more than a few hours charge

I think the '08 R1 had autochoke.
Sounds like this isn't working.
Is the starter motor turning quickly or just sluggishly? it should be quick, two hours charge may not be enough.
Some bike immobilisers will allow the engine to be cranked, but they won't allow the fuel circuit to work.
The funny smell is the starter motor, don't crank for more than 15s at a time, you will burn it out.

Ahh the ht leads i wasnt sure which way around they go so guessed and assumed it would just run a bit rough if wrong way around, i will try turning them around.
The fuel is fine only bought it the other day.
There is no coolant as there is no cooling system fitted yet, just want to get the engine running first.
I havent touched the timing.
Im not sure how fast the starter is turning but it doesnt sound very fast and ive only been turning it for a couple of seconds at a time.

If you have swapped the HT leads around, then at best it won't start or will start but run like s
t.
At worst, you will fry the ecu.
STOP MESSING ABOUT WITH IT!
Get someone who know what they are doing (i.e. a bike mechanic) to give you a hand.
At this time of year, there isn't a lot of "on the side" work for bike mechanics, so if you stick your head into the workshop of your local Yamaha motorcycle shop you might get a taker quite quickly.

spot on advice, shame I didn't think of it first.
But one or two posts above has me confused,
how...can connecting the HT leads to the sparks affect timing?
Sure, the spark will be in the wrong place, but the timing
is controlled by a belt or chain, and the OP hasn't mentioned touching anyting or TDC, etc.
