Now then.

We are in the market for some new flooring and have decided to go for solid wood I must admit to being a tad clueless as to what's what.

The space is an open plan L shape incorporating kitchen/dining/family room and we've calculated needing 35sqm of flooring.

To give an idea the longest part of the L is 7.1 x 6 metres

Only places we've looked so far are B&Q, united carpets and beds and floors2go.

I'm after a darker shade and really liked this stuff in B&Q
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detai...

Hard to get any idea off the picture but it has a very subtle, symmetrical contour which makes it look really good....imo.

Anyway, there is a small issue with the floor in that it's an extension so a small part of the floor (approx 2.5 x 1.5) is concrete, half is the old floor boards and the rest is the new chipboard...will that impact on how it goes down in terms of underlay?

Can anyone recommend a decent, honest and knowledgeable retailer of flooring somewhere in or near Leeds??

We got ours from Storey carpets believe it or not. Was pretty pricey but beautiful quality wood, looked superb when it was down too. We pulled it up though, and a portion of it not resides in a mates house on account of it being too easily scratched by the dog's claws. We've got laminate down now which is a bit more robust.

My parents had some solid oak flooring supplied / fit by a company from Thorner. The name was something like Thorner flooring services.

If you want to fit it yourself a guy I went to school with has a place at Garforth called Wood Floor World, I don't know what he stocks but it would be worth a look as he specialises in the stuff. I think he offers an installation service too.

Good info, cheers.

Seems you can't really get a decent, dark coloured, solid floor for less than £35-40/m...ouch££

Well I just got a sample of this stuff from an Ebay shop based in Bradford.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/150mm-Real-Distressed-Antiqu...

It looks a bit lighter in the flesh and seems really rather nice. I can't see a reason not to buy it for the price. £30/meter inv VAT.

For the area I need it'll be just over a grand.

I have been looking for a floor for nearly 9 months!

I have had numerous samples, i have even got a couple of sq meters of a couple of different types i liked to make sure they were ok- they were not lol.

I wanted walnut engineered, i didnt want to spend over £35 if i could help it, i did not want 3 strip, i wanted at least 3mm top layer, i wanted it to be hard wearing- which if you look at most walnut it is very soft and is satin laqured, which makes it very bad for scratches, even the £100 a m stuff was bad! I actually had a sample off the link you gave too which was equally as soft.

In the end and you won't believe this i got it from b&q of all places. I had seen some walnut engineered in there a while back for £40 per m which imo was a bit rich for a 3 strip 3mm top layer.
However i went in one weekend and it was there for £28.99 which got me thinking i may be able to live with 3 strip. The samples were very very hard, i actually think the floor may be acacia as it looks pretty much identical to walnut, acacia is harder and i am quite happy if it really is acacia.

Anyway got girlfriend to go down and sort it all out and i dont know how but she managed to get a further 15% off of the already wrongly priced £28.99! (manager said we could have it for that as even though it was wrong it was marked as such) so we end up paying about £25 lol.
Still awaiting delivery but i am still in shock and as such had to get all the above off my chest lol. No where sells a decent quality walnut/acacia for £25 per m.
Its also nice to know that b&q are good if theres any problems. One of the samples i got back in march this year i have noticed has started to delaminate!

Yes, british hardwoods in bradford. It is likely that most of the installers etc will get their wood from here. For solid wood, they would probably do absolutely anyting you asked for....

What a waste of bloody time.

We allowed 1.5 hours from Leeds to get there before they closed. Spent nearly an hour stuck in traffic getting to the bloody place via Bradford (I HATE driving through bradford). Rang them to see if they could hang on and stay open for 15mins extra as that's how far away we were and they wouldn't.

Tw@ts.

I'll spend my money elsewhere.

If you have any doubts about the integrity of the floor DPC anywhere, do put down a plastic membrane sheet.
Solid wood absorbs damp and swells like crazy, turning your loverly flat floor into a rollercoater ride

yeah I'm aware of that.

It's a funny set up. As it's an extension is a mismatch of existing floor boards, concrete (for the kitchen) and then chipboard in the new bit. We will have to ensure the concrete bit is bang on level with the floor boards and fit a DPC over the top.

Did you have an appointment? If not I'm not surprised at their response. You don't know me, but I might buy some wood off you. Can you open up specially just for me....

Even if you did have an appointment, its not as if you were going to conclude a massive lucrative contract with them...

Imagine how many times before they have been dicked around by people who were 15 minutes away only to never turn up!

Not having a go, but think of it from their point of view

A very useful tool.
