Retrieving saved data from ps3 HDD

Recently had the YLOD on ps3. Bought a new one but can't get my saved files off the old HDD.

Tried putting it in a mates ps3-tells me I'd have to format-obviously not going to happen.

Also tried it in another mates apple 'big fat desktop' (can't remember what it's called. E saw files but had no idea which to copy as Sony seem to have a proprietary formatting.

Any advice? I have 70+ hrs of FO3 (unfinished) and similar of RDR, also unfinished.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, the only way is in the original ps3, after it is out it must be formatted before it can be used and the information is encrypted so cannot be read in a pc or mac as far as I know. Hopefully someone will be along shortly to tell you things have changed and there is a way, I hope!

That seems to be what I've found so far on brief googling.

I refuse to believe it is impossible though-it is data on a HDD at the end if the day.

Edit: Hmmmmm further research suggests I'm TF'ed
