Could do with finding a few that aren't too far from the centre. Went to the "Malt Shovel" recently on Cockburn street which was nice but went on a weekday and seemed to lack atmosphere.

Open fires and comfy sofas are really the aim and a few decent ales.

Just missing some oldy-wordly pubs from back in Norfolk I think (landlord with a straw hat, no front teeth and webbed fingers is the norm wink )

Not looking for spit n sawdust just a nice traditional pub with a good atmosphere for a few early evening/saturday day time pints.

I've heard some good things about http://www.ghillie-dhu.co.uk/

If you want a decent pint - try Mathers.

I have always liked Milnes but then again haven't been in there for around 5 years biggrin

The Abbotsford in Rose Street hasn't changed in years, decent pub food and always a good atmosphere. Teuchters in William Street at the West End is another good one.

Malt and Hops in Leith (Shore) is very very good. Got a cracking range of real ales on at all times.

Desperately trying to remember the New Town pub that's famous for its Bass - just off Broughton St.

Milnes is still good the basement bar is better than the street level bar though.

Abbotsford in Rose street is a good bar but might be bit formal for you, but a very well run clean bar and one I always pop into when I'm having a few in Edinburgh..

Oh, and though not particularly central, the Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston's brilliant. Especially if you fancy a game of skittles biggrin

Well another snow day for me meant I was in town and stopped off for a cheeky pint in the Guildford arms which I believe is the abbotsfords sister pub, overall I was quite impressed. Only had time to sample 1 of the 9 ales they had on offer but it was very good, (St Magnus, 5.2%) even if it was a bit steep at £3.50.

Will definitely try the pubs in the Rose street area, Abbotsford and Milnes. To skint for this weekend but next Fri/Sat I'll be seeing what Rose street has to offer smile
