Hi guys,

I have a MK1 Focus, and I have a weird problem with it when using the Quickclear in the mornings.

Basically, the passenger half defrosts fully, and THEN very slowly the drivers side starts to defrost. I'm pretty sure it works a bit on the drivers side.

Shouldn't it all defrost at the same time?

Here's a pic:

It looks like just your heater defrosting the driver's side. Quite an expensive fix if you need a new quick clear screen.

Looks like it's busted. Mine defrosts quickly, all at the same time.

It should all be the same both sides. I've seen the odd element not working and leaving a thin line up the screen before. Never seen a whole side. Something is wrong with it. What that is I don't know enough to say.

That happened to swmbo's. IIRC it was £130 ish for a new one from a small indy fitter. Expect Ford or the likes of autoglass to quote three times that.

Glass excess....

But I wonder if it's a bigger connection. Might be each side has it's own feed? And a connection needs tidying rather than a problem with the screen?

It could well be a corroded connector on the drivers side. They are a bid awkward to get to. They are under the scutttle panel each side in the bottom corner of the screen. Disconnect them and take a look at the pins, if they're corroded give them a clean up with an abrasive pad and see if it helps.

I suppose it could also be a bad earth on the drivers side. An 8mm self tapping type bolt on the inner wing. Remove that clean it up and see if that helps too.

I've guessing it uses small elements across the windscreen and as with a rear heated screen, and these are connected at one side (the passenger side in your case).

Can you see any damage to the screen around where it stops clearing (e.g around the mirror?).

Either way you wouldnt be able to fix the elements. New screen it is...

Or as Munter said: It is powered in 2 sections??

On a MK1 Focus the heater wires run top to bottom, power coming in at the bottom (1 connector each side, screen split in two) and earth at the top (earth wire runs down the side of the screen behind the outer trim)

Later screens had a power in at each bottom corner with an earth top centre connecting behind the interior lamp.

1) try the fuse.
2) check the connections behind the wiper linkage.

I have the exact same problem with mine, it's a right pain in the arse. I'll have a look at the fuses, not considered that yet for some reason.

More than likely it will require a new screen.

IIRC, there is a fuse for each side - they are independant.

In a seperate block next to the battery IIRC.
