I know this is done to death but I need a winter shed while the TVR is off the road through the winter months. I commute 50 miles a day mainly motorway. Now I would like to get a car for £1000 that will be reliable, economical 35mpg minimum 40+ really. Anyone fancy throwing over some ideas. I really fancy a 328i as when I was 19 I had a 03 plate 330ci and loved it!!!But I think would be very hard to constantly average over 35mpg in one and wouldnt get a very reliable one for a grand. I am going to be looking all week just thought I would get some extra opinions... thanks in advance!!!!

Go to Autotrader website

put 1000 as a maximum price

Search locally, probably within five miles unless you're somewhere very rural.

Buy what's in decent condition.

All cars at that price can go wrong, have issues etc. Most don't fail terminally.

If you can go for something large and bargish, 2.0 Omega, MkIII petrol Mondeo then you'll be away from the youth vote that pushes up prices of the small stuff,

Look at Euroboy's £1000 winter barge
For motorway driving, I reckon it would (ok, maybe at a push) hit the economy figures....?

You wont get a reliable XJS for a grand and even a 3.6 manual would struggle to touch the desired MPG...however...ace cars!

old (<2000) mondeo. quickclear windscreen, utterly reliable. Buy one for half your budget and spend the rest on beer.

Forget th Beemer, you'll get better value from a less popular make. After all it's just your winter shed.

Autotrader's got a 98 Vauxhall Omega diesel for £800 and also a 99 Saab 9-3 turbo diesel for £800 too. some car for pennies eh?

How about a Mondeo or even a Granada or Scorpio? There's plenty out there, just keep away from the boy racer stuff and you'll grab a bargain.

Second the Mk2 Mondeo suggestion - perfect bangernomics motor frankly.

1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine is the one to go for - reliable, reasonable performance and economy, and parts are cheap as chips as they're 10 a penny (Zetec engine). 1.6 petrol is slow and no more economical, and usually only in poverty spec Aspen models.

The 1.8TD is a old, crude diesel lump that's slow and not particularly economical, and the 2.5 V6 gives poor economy and isn't especially quick either. Never tried the ST200.
