I got a little lost this evening when trying to find a friends place in Vienna and during my journey I saw a white van driver smash into the back of another van whilst parking, placing a huge dent in the back of his door.

I immediately informed the van driver that I'd seen him whack the other car but he flatly denied it and walked off even with the threat of me calling the police.....so I did.

They later called me back and are asking me for details and to pop over to a local station for a statement at my convenience later this week which I'll of course do.

A friend of mine however accused me of being a nosey so and so and told me I should mind my own business. I was a bit shocked about this as if somebody hit my car and drove off, I'd be totally pissed off and completely grateful for somebody reporting the offender to the police.

Was I right to interfere? I don't see the problem!

You did the right thing. Morally justifiable.

I was a bit shocked at my friend to be honest. All the more strange as he's a very honest guy but I suppose you could say he keeps himself to himself. He also doesn't own a car so perhaps doesn't see that side to it, but it does make you wonder how many people are just like him.

Is this a serious question? Of course you should report a hit and run. It's morally indefensible not to.

I've reported other people for it, and I've benefited greatly thanks to my neighbour getting the reg number of a van that did a hit and run on my parked car while it was parked in the street outside my house.

It sort of was....but like I said, it just seemed strange how somebody I know well would tell me I should mind my own business. I suppose this is just a way to satisfy what I did. PH is a good place for that! thumbup

I left my car in a car park the other day, when i came back to it the bumper and rear lights were all smashed up.
Then i found this note under the wiper. It said:

I just accidentally reversed into your car.

Quite a few people saw me do it.

They think i'm leaving my name and details.

Well, i'm not.

If that's true than he's was a dhead.
My car has been dented and damaged three times now at college and nobody has said/done anything which is really annoying, one of the reasons I think nobody has done anything is because a) it's farnborough and b) my car is slightly better than most students cars there, I'm not being big headed.

He'll be the one that when you give him a lift slams the door on your car hard enough to rock the car...

I know that makes me sound like a
complete dick. I didn't mean it in a big
headed way, what I mean is they see a nice little car and think I have money to repair anything that goes wrong or damage, which I don't.

The problem is if you leave a note under the wiper as a witness, the miscreant will probably come back and remove it.
It's probably better to scratch your contact details on an undamaged panel instead.

You witnessed a crime (careless driving and attempting to leave the scene of an accident) and have a civic duty to do the right thing. Confronting the driver was a bit stupid when you should have offered to be a witness to the Police if the damage is reported but the victim.

If you witness somethng similar over here.

Make notes about the driver and/or passenger/s; age, height, build, hair colour, eye colour (if you're close enough), sex, race, language overheard (if relevent) and the vehicles (obviously); make, model, colour, year, damage done, registration numbers, location and time; then report it to the Police non-emergency number. Your contact details and all the notes you made. Take a few photo's with your phone if you can and offer to email these to the investigation officer if the collision is reported.

If the person driving is willing to break the law i.e careless driving and leaving the scene of a collision then they will more than likely be willing to commit assault as well. So don't confront these bottom feeders and let the Police/insurance companies do their job/s.
