I need a new rad so went straight to MX5Parts online. The price seemed a bit steep at £149; yikes

http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...

So I googled and came up with an outfit called 'fastrads' who are offering one with a 2 year warranty at £75 (when you add on VAT and the extra warranty).

http://www1.fastrads.co.uk/radiators/mazda/mx5/MX5...

So half the price....... scratchchin Anyone got any thoughts? I know that essentially you get what you pay for but this price differential is pretty startling. And times is hard....!

Has anyone used the company before?

TIA

No experience of Fastrads but I bought a new rad from MX5 Parts about 3 months ago and was unhappy with the fit of the drain plug which, when screwing it in but without any great pressure, jumped its thread and wouldn't tighten. It was a different fitment from the rad I had taken out. I went back to MX5 Parts and they confirmed that they supply both Mazda originals and pattern rads, depending which they have in stock at the time, and mine was a pattern rad. They sent me a new drain plug, which seems to be doing the job just fine, but I guess there's no reason to suppose that someone else's pattern rad wil be any different in quality to MX5 Part's pattern rad.

Yeah; not always enamoured of MX5Parts myself.

I'll go with the £75 one.

MX5 Parts do an aftermarket replacement rad too. I haven't found anyone yet who wasn't happy with it.

I thought the price quoted by the OP sounded more expensive than I remembered paying: I obviously chose the aftermarket version! (for a Mk1 in my case). Certainly, once I'd got a drain plug that fitted, everything else about it has been fine. Mind, in current conditions it would probably run nice and cool with no radiator at all!

I got the 'pattern' rad from MX5Parts 18 months ago and haven't had any issues since. Well, apart from being me being a bit of a doofus when trying to fit it...

I've ordered the fastrads one; it should be as good as any non-OEM I would hope.........

Where are you based? I put a new rad (from MX5 parts.com) on my Mk1 late this summer, and the car is now being scrapped, interested? It's in Oxford.

A nice offer but Mk1 rad is different from Mk2 rad wink

Why is it being scrapped? What's wrong with it?

Failed an MOT on rust underneath and on sills. The MOT stations, who are guys I have used to fix all of my cars for a good few years, quoted £700 to fix.

It runs well, a start first time every time, paint is very faded and window winders don’t operate.

I'm not sure what to do with it, its been a daily driver for years, and I love it, but in the last 6 months all I have needed is a car to get me to an airport on a Monday morning and home again on a Friday night. I am moving into a new place with more garage space in the new year so if I can hold on to it until then I might fix it over time.

Keep it. An ideal project.

At the very least, rather than scrap it if you can hold on until spring you'll be able to sell it as a project. Shame to see one of these wrecked if they can be restored....

I know someone who might be interested in a project car in need of welding if you are interested in selling...

I was going to say, definitely keep it.. It'd be a good project car, window winders is just an excuse to get rid of them for some lighter units and make abit of a track car.
