I recently sold my FTO and picked up a mark 1 mx-5, then two days later found out my gf is pregnantsmile ssssoooo, unfortunately the mazda has to go for a more sensible car especially as my gf does not drive.

I used to have an E36 325i coupe which I loved so am thinking of returning to the bmw fold, more to the point the E36 range and a saloon. Now, I would love an M3 or 328i sport but my sensible head is thinking about the diesels, 318/325??? I think?

What are these models like, performance/economy wise? any major problems to worry about specific to these models??? Or should I just try and get another 325i or 328i......decisions decisions......

Is there a definite reason why you want a diesel and a 4-door?

Gf has made it clear we 'need' a four door as will make life easier with the baby. And regarding the diesel as my job is starting to take me further afield then the diesel economy makes more sense.

No personal experience of the diesels (used to run a 328 touring) but I think the 325 was very highly regarded when introduced.

dunno about the diesels but you'll get a really good 325i or 328i saloon for absolute pence these days.

To be fair I would prefer a coupe again rather than saloon. Anyone know how easy it is to manoeuvre a small child and associated gubbins with only the two doors??

no children, food or anything with even the vaguest chance of ballsing up the interior is allowed anywhere near my car.

Far too much of a ballache to do on a regular basis and if it's your only car, it's certainly something I couldn't be Arsed with. The E36 Saloon/Tourer is a better choice, in my opinion

My dad has a 320i touring and that really is big enough plus is a decent drive, even tho it's an auto. Think I will try and find a 325tds to try out, failing that it's a petrol saloon, can't believe how cheap they have become??

Don't go for the 318, it's too slow. I drove the 325tds in work when they were new. They never gave any problems and were sold after 3 very hard years and about 180000 miles.
Don't expect them to be on a par with modern BMW diesels though.

Wouldn't bother with a 325tds the fuel economy is shocking for a diesel, not worth the extra premium you pay for a diesel.

I just bought a 1998 323 sport touring for Mrs to cart around the nipper. It's the perfect carriage for the job although if I could change anything it would the autobox which does nothing for economy but, car has just 27000 miles on the clock and drives like ne. So it's a very minor niggle for such a cheap vehicle! Tourings can loom awesome with a couple of small mods too

don't forget how many M parts are easily fitted. bumpers, sills, wheels, etc. wouldn't take much to make a really nice looking touring.

So in my search for a new baby friendly car, saloon or touring, what would be the best engined variant?? I've only had real experience of my old 325i, what are the 320i/328i models like?? Take it the diesels aren't that clever????

328 is an excellent engine. not a deal breaker, but try to avoid a nikasil engine if you can. (do a google search, there's an easy visual check you can do). the 325 and 328 have very similar bhp, but 328 has more torque and a couple of scrap yard scavenges will unlock significant power gains.

So we used to have a E36 Touring as our main car for a while and can only praise it highly. The car was comfortable (full leather) torquey (2.8) and very versatile. All in all highly recommended. Only niggle was the standard BMW alarm, which is crap.

I currently have a E36 Coupe and while my wife E39 5er was having its ZF box rebuilt we used the coupe as our sole car. We have two boys aged 2 and 1 and to be honest it was a bit of a squeeze and a pain. Not too bad but noticeably uncomfortable putting the kids in the back. The coupe wouldn't be my first choice at all.

Go for a Touring and thank yourself for it.
