Right PH, abuse time.

Recently, I've been looking at MX5's thinking I could get one cheap now, rag it about a bit, and if it ends up going to the scrappy, so be it. I've found a suitable shed (less than 800 quids worth), so it would be disposable (less than a set of tyres on a proper car). Armed with ditchfinders, it could be a good laugh.

Now, here's the spastic part. Insurance fully comp? 780 quid. On an 800 quid car (fully comp). So, I thinks - i only want TPFT / 3rd party only, if it was nicked, I'd not lose much sleep. Unfortunately, whilst tpft is 680, 3rd is 900 (???). I realise in advance that 3rd party only people must prang things more.

So, just as a laugh, I checked the comp prices if it was parked at my old man's gaff daily. 300 quid. Much more like it!

As you might guess - can I insure a car at the "wrong" address, then just not claim if it was pinched / killed at my place? Would that still be fraud? I'm currently at a loss otherwise how to justify a second weekend car, just to abuse it - I'd rather spend the difference insurance wise on upgrading the proper (still hairdressers) weekend job.

Knowingly providing false information is certain an offense of some kind - I guess it is fraud. Certainly any claim wil be invalidated if they find out; not just theft

try Adrian Flux for a classic policy

This lot do pay as you go car insurance on a month by month basis. It's a bit more expensive than normal but if it blows up after a month you're not out of pocket. You can have up to 3 cars on it at any time and I use it if I buy something for a laugh or to sell on.

Cheers Cort.

I'll have a word with flux tomorrow. They already insure the Boxster, so i can't see how it's any great risk to add an MX5 on third party oly - it's not like I can drive both at once. I do admit though - although I don't "drift" the box at 5mph on ungritted roads (for fear of chunking an alloy), I would in a Scrappy - spec MX5. Either way, a winter / spring of slghtly sideways fun isn't worth risking a fraud probelm ,so I guess insuring it elsewhere is out of the options box for now...

or try mannings (I have the TVR with them) , or check out the TVR insurance sticky in the general tvr forum.

If you go for limited mileage you might find a fully comp policy is not that bad.

Seriously, an MX5 shouldn't cost any more than about £300 to insure on limited miles.

Do some searching, join the MX5 owners club and try the recommended insurers for MX5s. You'll get that price down.

If you have a main car as well, then call a broker and ask for a "mirror policy" against you main no claims...

If not then see above advice re: MX 5 owners clubs, etc.

As for the morals about providing slightly inaccurate address information to your insurance company I will not comment but if you made a claim, I do not think you will have any problems with providing inaccurate information as they will never find out.

Unless you fit their demographic/profiling based on previous risk exposure for fronting / false details etc, in which case they will investigate...

I have recently bought a £600 MX5, and wasn't prepared to pay £700-£800 to insure it.

Hence, mine is insured with Peter Best Insurance (Ecclesiastical policy) as a second car: Classic policy, limited miles: £170/year fully comp, including comprehensive breakdown cover. Job jobbed!

Ecclesiastical? Are you a man of the cloth?

I was renewing my MX5 policy a few months back.

Flux's quote was a joke, A-Plan's quote was a joke.

My advice is try elsewhere.

I got mine insured through a-plan - they were willing to match my 6 years NCB from my main policy.

Worth noting, classic insurance is very cheap, but normally only applies if you're keeping the car garaged. If its on the road (as mine is) then it doesn't work
