Hmm. I doubt it'd work on a game due to the amount of damage zones etc that there is to get hit in a game, whereas that is a set out route, with particle effects in place, which is why it looks like it's exploding. A game has too many variables for that to be carried out with technology currently available.

I could be wrong, but i'm just trying to remember what we were told at college when i was going 3d animation a couple of years back.

You would NEVER get the licensees to agree to damage like that. The amount of fking about it takes for sponsors to let you draw scratches on it etc is massive.
T84 should be able to shed a bit more light on it.

I was thinking more so games like Burnout and GTA etc, where the cars are fictional.

the initial damage is wicked but after the initial impact things just bounce way too much

too many pieces for a game to implement
